James had been previously married to Sarah Armstrong, whom died and was buried in Eastern Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, before meeting and marrying Eliza. James and Eliza ended up in Breckinridge County where they raised eight children: James Putnam, Horace Greeley, Willy, Lucy Bell, Minnie, George, Harry Clark, and Bennie. James had expressed a desire to be buried next to his first wife at Eastern Cemetery when he died. Eliza followed those desires and buried him next to her. Eliza is buried next to her son Horace Greeley Stewart and a baby only 14 months old, Maggie Roberta (who's parents are unknown at present). Additional Comments: Eastern Cemetery in Louisville has under gone many, many years of financial problems and neglect within it's perimeters. A few decades ago it was learned that mismanagement of burials/reselling of plots made it nearly impossible to identify individuals within some graves due to double burials in some cases. In recent years there have also been numerous counts of vandalism to the markers as well as the chapel at the back of the cemetery.
