Washington and Pleasant Grove. This is the complete list of all readable stones as of Memorial Day, May 29, 2000. There are 43 field stones used as markers. According to Mr. George Maddox, longtime member of Bethel and caretaker of the cemetery for many years, the church would not charge a fee for a burial plot, and many times local people who could not afford a stone, much less a funeral, but still wanted a "decent Christian burial" found a haven and final resting place at Bethel. These graves were often marked with field stones. Unfortunately, the church was dependent upon the local undertaker to keep accurate records, as the church was on a "circuit" with Cedar Grove Methodist and for a time Mt. Washington Methodist, and had no pastor of their own. The members of Bethel today, as well as historically, are bound by not only the Christian Beliefs they share, but many are related by either blood or marriage. Flowers are placed on the graves and markers of those that are known today, as well as the ones who have only a field stone. FIELD STONES WITH INITIALS CARVED IN THEM "A.G." "A. K." "G. (?)"
