Eden Cemetery Mt. Eden Cemetery is located on Highway 44 West in Shepherdsville, Bullitt County, Kentucky. It is about 7 miles west of Shepherdsville. To put this list together I contacted my cousin, John Moore, now one of the trustees of the cemetery. His father was James Fletcher Moore who is buried at the cemetery. There three list for me to put together into one, hopefully complete, list. One list was made by George Funk when the remains were moved from what is not Fort Knox Reservation. There were a total of 292 remains moved. Of these, one was moved to South Jefferson Cemetery located on Dixie Highway in Jefferson County, Kentucky. This was Weeden Funk died 1909. He is also included in my list of Mt. Eden. The second list I used was of the new graves after the removal from Fort Knox. The third list was one I made from the headstones at the graveyard. The names in bold are of those stones. Any year dates that are like this, 1/1/61, should be 1/1/1961. When I put this on a spreadsheet it dropped the 19 off. I have tried to make sure this is a complete and accurate list. If there are any mistakes in my typing I am sorry. If you would like any more information I would be glad to try to find that for you. EDEN CHURCH AND CEMETERY, BULLITT COUNTY, KY Mt. Eden Church was organized in 1820, in a log house on the Mt. Eden road by the Reverend Richard Tydings, one of the great Methodist preachers of his day. At this time the members would fight Indians in order to hold services. In 1849, the first church was built and dedicated as Mt. Eden Church on ground given by William and Mahaly Green (Jefferson County Deed Book 1, page 486) about two miles from the log house. The first pastor of the church was Reverend Joseph Scobee. The log house was moved to a farm across from Mt. Eden church and used as a home for the George Joyce family, who came from North Carolina. The church was used as a Union Church until fire destroyed the building in 1879. The congregation then met in different homes until the new church was built and dedicated as a Methodist Church in 1884, by the Reverend L. B. Davidson, who served on this circuit for thirteen (13) years. The ground for the building and cemetery was given by Mr. James Joyce. The building was built by Mr. Sam Hornbeck, and the foundation and oak sills were laid by Mr. Richard Moore. The pulpit and chancel rail was made by Mr. William Whiteman, and the pews were made by Mr. Sam Hornbeck. Mt. Eden is the oldest place of worship in Bullitt County. It was a favorite meeting place in the community, and the building was filled each preaching day. During the summer months each preaching day was an all day affair. Mt. Eden was sold in 1942, by the Methodist, when more ground was added to Fort Knox. Mt. Eden was bought by it’s members and friends, and kept as a community church. In October, 1956, it was sold again, when more ground was brought for Fort Knox, and is now used as a Baptist Church on Highway forty-four (44). Amount the pastors, who served the church besides the Reverend Tydings, Reverend Scobee, and Reverend Davidson, have been Reverend Samuel P. Hines, Reverend James Phillips, Reverend B.M. Messick, Reverend Enoch Crow, Reverend M. M. Hunter, Reverend James M. Wooldridge, Reverend James C. Brandon, and Reverend Daniel Peak. Mt. Eden Cemetery and thirteen (13) family cemeteries in the community, which contained some three-hundred and forty-one bodies , have been moved, and reburied in the beautiful new cemetery that the United Stated Government bought for the purpose on Highway forty-hour(44), six miles west of Shepherdsville, Kentucky. Among those buried there are Isaac Skinner and his wife Elizabeth. Isaac Skinner was among the first settlers in Bullitt County, coming to Bullitt County in 1775, from Loudoun County, Virginia. He discovered the Salt Wells and served in the Revolutionary War. In 1781, when he returned to his saltworks, he purchased four-hundred acres of ground in the Mt. Eden community, and jug the Bullitt Lick Hill to get his farm. Mr. Skinner died in 1841 and was preceded in death by his wife in 1830. In the same burial plot are his son Richard Skinner and his wife Rebecca, his granddaughter, Eliza Moore, and her husband Levi Moore, who raised race horses, and his great-grandson Richard Moore and his wife, Dora Moore. Mr. Moore owned and operated the Locust Grove stock and fruit farm, and Richard and Dora were the grandparents of George L. Funk. Also buried are Dr. Richard L. Tydings, and his wife Julia, the grandparents of Mrs. George L. Funk. Dr. Tydings spent his entire medical career in the practice in the Mt. Eden and Cupio section of Bullitt County. Dr. Charles O. Tydings, his son, is still practicing medicine in Louisville and has been for the past fifty-three years. Also buried there are Mr. James Joyce (Uncle Jim as he was called), the most powerful man in Bullitt County and the largest landowner. His monument is a large limestone rock he found in the field, and instructed his nephew Mr. William F. Joyce of Shepherdsville to place at the head of his grave. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hardesty are buried there. They are the parents of Miss Letitia Hardesty of Washington, D. C., and the grandparents of Mr. Robert Hardesty of Shepherdsville, and Mr. Richard Hardesty, President of the United Furniture Store her in Louisville. Also Mr. and Mrs. Robert Funk, grandparents of our late Attorney General, A. E. Funk; Mr. George Kalfus Johson, Uncle Kalf as he was called, would always sit in the Amen corner of the church, and with his joyful shouts of Amen helped the pastor preach a better and perhaps a longer sermon; Also I. D. Skinner, and his wife, Margaret, Uncle Doc, as he was called, kept store at Cupio for years; Also Nathan Skinner and his wife Minerva, who operated a nursery, and who served as captain in the war between the States: Also buried there is Evans Moore, who was in the last Indian fight on the Salt River in 1788, and his son William Moore, both salt makers. The first funeral was held in the old Mt. Eden Church in 1849, was that of Nathan Joyce. It is hoped someday a Non-Denominational Chapel will be built here This cemetery was made possible by our United States Government under the direction of Mr.. Fred Morgan of the United States Army Engineers and was dedicated on May 25,1958 at 3:00 PM. The service was called to order by Mr. Robert Hardesty of Shepherdsville, Ky. after a few minutes of silent prayer as a tribute to Mr. Dave Potter who designed the cemetery and Mr. William F. Joyce who helped to identify and locate the graves of most of the people who were buried in the family cemeteries, both of these good men have passed to their reward in the past few months. The prayer was made by George Funk of Fern Creek, Ky. after which Mr. Funk made a few remarks telling the group of some 60 people gathered there how the work was done and the careful and reverent way the graves were opened and the remains placed in new boxes and reburied in the new cemetery. Mr. Fred Morgan of the United States Army Engineers was introduced after some remarks made by him. Mr. Wilson also of the Army Engineers and the trustees of the cemetery were introduced. Mr. Funk then introduced the speaker, Reverend John Brinson, Pastor of the St. Mark Methodist Church, in Louisville, Kentucky, and former pastor of the Davidson Memorial Methodist Church and Cemetery, brought forth a very inspiring message and dismissed the group with prayer. The Trustees are: George L. Funk J. F. Moore Robert Hardesty Howard Hardin ??HENRY 7/28/1861 5/5/1862 ??????, MARGRET 1916 1995 ACKERMAN, TINA 3/20/1934 --------- ALLEN, "R.
