Present: the worshipful Moses MOORE, Thomas SAUNDERS, Benj'n OGDEN and James CALDWELL Ordered that John LEWIS, Nicholas BRASHEAR, Jesse DRAKE, Adam SHEPHERD, Samuel CROW and Henry CRIST be appointed Commissioners for the purpose of dividing lands within this county. Upon the motion of John & Samuel HORNBECK for leave to build a water grist mill on Brook's Run on their own Land It is ordered that a Writ of ad quad Dammon issue for the purpose of ascertaining whether any or what damage would accrue to any other person if said mill should be executed. Ordered that James SHANKS be recommended to the Governor as a proper person to be appointed as Surveyor of this County in the room of John DRAKE who has neglected to come forward to qualify. Ordered that the hands who live on the upper side of McCullom's Run between s'd run and Salt River as far up as to the Shelby County line be added to the hands assigned to assist John LEWIS in opening the road from his house to Shelby County line. Ordered that Christian J. SAUNDERS bee appointed Overseer of the road leading from Shepherdsville to Manns Lick from where the same crosses the old road leading from BROOKE's Plantation to the County line in room of Richard SHANKLIN and that the hands who assisted him formerly clearing out that part of the road do now assist in keeping the same in repair. Ordered that the hands living in Shepherdsville and those living between the road leading to Louisville and Floyds Fork be appointed to assist Anthony PHELPS in keeping the said road in repair as far as to Brooke's Run. Ordered that Dennis QUICK be appointed overseer of the road leading from Shepherdsville to Manns Lick from where said road leaves the Louisville road to the old road leading from BROOKE's Plantation and the road from Shepherdsville to Louisville as far as HORNBACKS Plantation do assist said QUICK in keeping the road. Ordered that Lawrence RUBY be appointed overseer of that part of the road leading from this place to Delany's Ferry which lies between Benjamin OGDEN's and the County line and that the hands living on the east side of Salt River from the mouth of Coxes Creek to the west fork so as to include Nich's CRIST and Elisha CARR and also the hands from which the County line Crosses said road to Salt River to also include William OWENS to assist said RUBY in keeping the road in repair. Ordered that Sharp SPENCER be appointed Overseer of the road from Benjamin OGDEN's towards this place as far as to where the same will intersect the Bards Town road and that the hands living above Cedar Creek and Butchers Run and between Salt River & said Road up as high as the mo. of Coxes Creek and Benj. OGDONS do assist him in keeping the same in repair. Ordered that William PANEBAKER Be appointed Overseer of the road from the Cane(?) Spring to Butchers Run and that the hands living on the north of the Knobbs and Coxes run and on the south of DELANY's road and the mo. of the west fork except Elisha (no surname) can assist him in keeping the same in Repair. Ordered that Leonard BURCH be appointed overseer of the road from Butchers Run to this place and that the hands on the lower side of said Run between the knobbs and Salt River do assist him in keeping the same in repair. Ordered that Enoch McKINSIE be appointed Overseer of the Road from the County line on Wilsons Creek at Dr. SMITHs to Crooked Creek and that all the hands on the NW side of Wilsons Creek as far as Cane Run do assist him in keeping the same in repair. Ordered that Thomas PRESLEY be appointed Surveyor of the road from Crooked Creek to Shepherds Mill as far as to where the same intersects with the Road leading from Bards Town to this place and that the hands on the northwest side of Cane Run and those on Crooked Creek do assist said (PENSLEY?) PRESLEY in keeping said road in repair. Ordered that Marsham BRASHEAR be appointed a Commissioner to take in the list of Taxable Property on the North Side of Salt River in the room of Joseph SAUNDERS, resigned. Ordered that Thomas C. BRASHEARS be appointed Commissioner to take in the lists of Taxable Property on the southside of Salt River in this county in the room of Joseph SAUNDERS, resigned. The Court proceeded to fix the Rates of Liquor and ----- to be demanded and received by the Tavern Keepers in this County as follows: For a dinner 1/ 5 For breakfast and supper 1/3 For lodging /6 For whisky per half pint /9 for peach Brandy 1/- for Rum (?) 2/- for Lisbon wine per Quart 6/- For Horse at hay & stablage 1/- For Corn or Oats per gallon / 8 for pasturage per night / 6 Ordered that Hezekiah STOVALL be appointed Constable for the District which lies between the N.W. side of Salt River and the Road leading from this place to Louisville. Upon the motion of John LEWIS ordered that a License be granted him to keep a Tavern upon entering into Bond as the Law directs. Upon the motion of Randolph SPICER Ordered that Samuel SMYTH, Collin W. DANIEL and Francis CHAIN be appointed commissioners to perpetuate the testimony.... the special call of two entrys on the Rolling Fork one in the name of John HUMPHREYs for 1400 acres the other in the name of William SPICER for 1400 acres. Upon the motion of Lawrence RUBY ordered that a License be granted him to keep a Tavern at his House on hi entering into Bond as the Law directed. Upon the motion of Joseph IRWIN, Order that a license be granted him to keep a tavern at his house upon entering into Bond according to Law. Ordered that Benjamin OGDEN and Joseph IRWIN, gent. be appointed judges of the ensuing election and M. James SIMPSON be appointed Clerk to the Judges. Ordered that Benjamin SUMMERS be appointed to procure to be finished the two lower stories of the Stone store House of Adam SHEPHERD on bank of Salt River in such a manner as to serve for a temporary Jail for this County to be paid for out of County Levies when collected. Ordered that the further time until next court be given to the viewers appointed to view a road from John LEWIS's to this place and to Bullitt Lick to view the same and make a report. Ordered that Adam SHEPHERD, Armestead MOORHEAD and John HOUGH be appointed Commissioners to set at the ensuing June Court the building of a Jail for this County to the lowest bidder agreeable to a plan this day agreed upon by the court which is to be 40 feet in length and 20 feet in width from outside to outside two stories high with a passage **** (blotted out) feet through the middle and that they advertise the same at the several adjacent courthouses and in the news papers. Upon the motion of Benjamin SUMERS, high Sheriff ordered that it be certified that he came into court and protested against his being liable to suffer any Damage on account of the want of a jail in this County. Recorded that the court be adjourned. At a monthly Court held for the County of Bullitt on Tuesday the 23rd day of May, 1797 Present: Moses MOORE, Jesse DRAKE, James CALDWELL and Benjamin OGDEN. Ordered that Isaac DEXTER be appointed overseer of the Road leading from Louisville to Bards Town from the South side of Salt River to the County line and that the hands living at McCLARTYs (?) Plantation where the said Road crosses the River and the hands living above the road between the river and the county line do assist him in keeping the same in repair. A Deed of Bargain and sale from James COX and Mary his wife to Elisha CARR proved by Adam SHEPHERD, A. HUBBARD, Peter TROUTMAN. On the motion of Ben WITHERS, License is granted to him to keep a Tavern in Shepherdsville, Bond with Henry CRIST but security to be given at the Clerk's Office within ten days. On the motion of Eleanor COLLINS, Widow and Relict of James COLLINS dec'd who made Oath recorded to Law, admin. of the estate of said James her dec'd Husband is granted her whereupon she gave Bond with Nicholas BRASHEAR, Benjamin POPE and Thomas 27 Jun 1797 - Monthly Court: Ordered that Richard Willis SHOCKENCY, a poor orphan of the age of 16 years on the 28th day of Feb last, be bound unto Tho. G. GREENFIELD, Blacksmith, agreeable to law. Deeds from Trustees of Shepherdsville to Ed. FRYE proved by B. SUMMERS, D. WILSON, Ja. LATHAM and ordered recorded. Deed from same to Ja. BROWN provided by B. POPE & ______ and D. WILSON and ordered recorded. Deed from same to A. MOREHEAD & LATHAM proved by D. WILSON and J. BROWN and Ed. FRYE and ordered recorded. Deed from same to D. WILSON proved by Ed FRYE, Ja LATHAM and Benj. SUMMERS ordered recorded. Deed from same to Benj SUMMERS proved by D. WILSON, Ja. BROWN and Ja. LATHAM Deed from same to James SIMPSON proved by D. WILSON and Ja. LATHAM & E. FRYE. Deed from Same to John HOUGH proved by T. SPEER (or SPEED?), B. POPE and Al RALSTON ordered recorded. Deed from Same to John COLLEN, Heir at Law to Ja. COLLEN proved by T. SPEER, Al RALSTON and B. POPE ordered recorded. Deed from same to John SCOTT, proved by Benj. SUMMERS, Ed. FRYE, Ja. LATHAM and ordered recorded. On the motion of Jacob BOWMAN by his attorney Ordered that Moses MOORE, John BURKS, Isaac SKINNER be appointed Commissioners to attend the said BOWMAN at an entry of 1000 acres one mile and a half below Bullitts Lick at the old Buffaloe Crossing on S. side of Salt River to take the Deposition of certain witnesses on behalf of the said BOWMAN to establish certain calls on cites specified in the said entry and that a warrant be issued accordingly. James LATHAM esq. having produced a commission from the Governor appointing him a Justice of the County Court for Bullitt County took the oath prescribed by the Constitution. Deed from James SAMUELS by his attorney, Samuel SMYTH to Enoch McKINSEY ackn. by said SMYTH and ordered recorded. Deed from Samuel SMYTH to Henry COUNTRYMAN ackn. and recorded. Ordered that James ROBINSON be appointed overseer of the Road leading from Shepherds Ville to Louisville from Brooks Run to the County line in the room of Isaac MARSHALL and that the same hands which were bound to assist MARSHALL do now assist said ROBINSON in keeping the road in repair.
