The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net Transcribed by: Anne Livingston Livings1@aol.com Date: 31 July 1999 *********************************************************************** Bullitt County Deed Book B p. 278 The United States of America (this is a large heading at the top) To all whom these letters Patent shall come: Whereas Hezekiah HARRIS a citizen of the United States hath alledged that he has invented an new and useful improvement in the Plough which improvement has not been known or used before his application has made oath that he deservedly believes that he is the true inventor or discoverer of the said improvement has paid unto the treasury of the United States, the sum of Thirty dollars delivered a receipt for the same and presented a petition to the Secretary of State, signifying a desire of obtaining an exclusive property in the said improvement and praying that a patent may be granted for that purpose: These are therefore to grant according to the law of the said Hezekiah HARRIS, his heirs, administrators or assigns for the term of fourteen years from the twenty fourth day of Feb 1808 the full and exclusive right and liberty of making and constructing using and vending to others to be used the said improvement a description whereof is given in the words of Hezekiah HARRIS himself in the Schedule hereto annexed and is made a part of these presents. In Testimony whereof I have caused these letters to be made patent and the Seal of the United States to be herewith affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Washington, this twenty fourth day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and eight and of the independence of the United States of America, the thirty second. Signed by the President Thomas JEFFERSON and under his name James MADDISON, Secretary of State, City of Washington. beneath this is entered a note of certificate dated 24 Feb 1808 by A. RODNEY, Attorney General of the United States confirming he had examined the above papers and found them conformable to law returning them to the Secretary of State within fourteen days. After this comes a lengthy description by Hezekiah about how his new plow worked. I ran out of time to transcribe it but if someone here is interested I would be happy to get it in the future.
