Court Order Book 1 p. 35 Ordered that John BURKES, Richard SHANKLIN, Christian J. SANDERS, James Francis MOORE and John MORE and Mason LUNSFORD be appointed to view the way from Bullitts Lick to Manns Lick and report the most direct and convenient way that a waggon road can be opened. I can tell you that if I saw Christian J. SANDERS on this page without any L's I would not be sure if I was looking at SANDERS or LANDERS but in context with the rest of the writing the record keeper keeps a very distinct L and this is not one of those at the beginning of this name. His capital L looks more like a printed L and the bottom of it always underlines the word he is writing so it is distinctively different than his letter S (which often looks like the way *I* make an L. !) I hope this makes sense without seeing it visually. Right near Christian he writes LEWIS and LOUISVILLE and the L is nothing like the letter at the beginning of Christian's surname - Benjamin SUMMERS is also on the page and his S is the same letter that begin's Christian's last name. Its an S. This looks a pretty sure thing. I have microfilmed copies of a few Bullitt tax lists in the original script - 1803 - no LANDERS under L. under the letter S the tax collector has: John (I think, the script is very scrunched as though the tax collector got in a big hurry and it could possibly be James but my reading is John) SANDERS - being taxed for himself and no land Gabriel SANDERS - no land taxed for himself and one Black person J. Christian SANDERS 544 acres on Floyds Fork in Bullitt Co. 1 white male over 16, 2 blacks over 21 and 3 blacks total. 1821 Tax list Bullitt Co. no LANDERS under L under the letter S he has recorded Thomas SAUNDERS 360 acres 3rd rate land valued at $1050 in Bullitt Co. on Cedar Creek, 197 acres 3rd rate land valued at $394 in Bullitt Co. on Cedar Creek, 25 acres 3rd rate land valued at $50 same place as the other two tracts. - 1 white male over 21, 5 Blacks over 16, 5 Blacks total, 6 horses. John W. SAUNDERS 125 acres 3rd rate land valued at $250 doesn't say where - 1 white male over 21 Christian J. SAUNDERS 544 acres valued at $2720 in Bullitt Co. and you've got me as to where it is in Bullitt Co.- looks like pow creek - script is very tiny and scrunched - 1 white male over 21, 1 white male 16-21, 1 Black over 16, 7 horses. James SANDERS (there is an initial but it is blotted past recognition - looks like maybe a C?) - no land - 1 white male over 21 Joseph SAUNDERS 317 acres 3rd rate land valued at $634 in Bullitt Co. on Cedar Creek, 1000 acres valued at $750 in Henry Co., 1 white male over 21, 1 white male 16-21, 1 Black over 16, 6 Blacks total in household, 3 horses George SAUNDERS - no land - being counted for 1 white male over 21, 1 Black total. 1 horse Nath'l P. SAUNDERS - no land - 1 white male over 21. 1 horse. Those are from photocopies of the film of the originals - the SAUNDERS/SANDERS show up constantly in the deed books and court orders
