The paper is quite aged, as is the binder it was in, and it was typed, not word processed. There is no copyright date or information on the papers CHAPPEL/ CHAPPELL, William and Ruth Virginia Pension #W.25410 Bounty Land Warrant # 42-160-55 On August 19 of the year 1833 in Bullitt County in the state of Kentucky at the age of 72 years, the said pensioner appeared in open cour and stated that he had been drafted in Chesterfield county in the state of Virginia in the fall of the year 1778 (shold be 1777??) to serve in the capacity of a private in the militia under the command of Captain John RICHIE for a tour of three months duration in the regiment under the command of Colonel Miles BOTTS. They then first marched to Jamestown and from there to Williamsburg in the state of Virginia. The said pensioner was thereupon honorably discharged in writing. Then again from Chesterfield county in the state of Virginia in the last of the month of February of the year 1778 the said pensioner enlisted to serve in the capacity of private for a tour of one years duration to serve in the company under the command of Captain William FOWLER and in the fifth regiment of the Virginia Line under the command of Colonel GASKINS in the brigade under the command of General MUHLENBURG. They then first marched from Chesterfield county to Valley Forge and there they joined the main army and the said pensioner was taken sick an dhe was then sent to Yellow Springs Hospital where he remained for two months. After leaving the hospital the said pensioner then rejoined his company at White Plains and they then marched to West Point and then in the middle of winter they marched to Middle Brook in the Jerseys under the command of Captain William BENTLY. He had enlisted to serve in the capacity of a private and he had then served as such for six months after which time he was appointed to serve in the capacity of an Orderly Sergeant. The said pensioner was then honorably discharged on the last day of the month of February or on the first day of the month of March in the year 1779 after having served for a period of one year. The said pensioner ws drafted to serve for one tour and he had then enlisted to serve on the other tour, and he stated that he remembered Colonel Miles BOTTS, Captain John ARCHER, Captain William FOWLER, Captain William BENTLEY, Colonel GASKINS and General MUHLENBURG. The affidavit of Jeremiah P. HINTON and Jesse WILSON was also given at the same time and in the same place as the foregoing. The deponenets stated and swore that at one time they had been both well and favorably acquainted with the said pensioner and they also stated and swore that in the neighborhood which he resided he was reputed to have served in the War of the Revolution and on the side of the United States of America. On May 27 of the year 1858 in Bullitt county in the state of Kentucky at the age of 85 years, Ruth CHAPPELL the widow of the said pensioner William CHAPPELL appeared in open court and stated that her husband, William CHAPPELL, had died in Lexington in the state of Kentucky at the home of her brother Laban HEADINGTON and she further stated that they had married in Bullitt county in the state of Kentucky in the fall of the year which was forth years ago by the Reverend Simon HALL and that her maiden name had been Ruth QUICK. She also appointed C. H. BARCKLEY of Louisville in the state of Kentucky to be ber lawful attorney. The affidavit of Lemon H. QUICK was also given at the same time and in the same place as the foregoing. The said deponenet stated and swore that the said pensioner and his widow had been duly and legally married and that the pensioner himself had died as his widow had stated and that she still remained his widow and relic. The affidavit of Ann GOLDSMITH was also given athe the same time and in the same place as the foregoing. The said deponenet stated and swore that at one time they had been both well and favorably acquainted with the said pensioner, and she further swore that they had been duly and legally married and that the said pensioner had died as had been stated and that Ruth CHAPPELL still remained his widow and relic. There was also a memorandum of the bill of sale for the coffin and hearse for the said pensioner, William CHAPPELL, and it was dated December 13, of the year 1833, which was therefore the time of the death of the said pensioner. Ruth CHAPPELL, the widow of the said pensioner, William CHAPPELL,received $50 per annum to commence on February 3 of the year 1853 and to continue for life unless she remarried in which event it was to be discontinued at the time of the marriage. On February 22 of the year 1869 in Bullitt County in the state of Kentucky at the age of 96 years, Ruth CHAPPELL appeared in open court and made her declaration for an increase of her pension. Isaac HIBB and Pemla BOWMAN at the same time declared that she was the identical person that she claimed herself to be. Ruth CHAPPEL, the widow fo the said pensioner, was on the Louisville Roll of Pensions at the rate of $96 per annum to commence on July 27 of the year 1868 and her certificate of pension for that amount was issued on March 29 of the year 1869 and it was then sent to the claimant in the care of John McCARTHY at Louisville in the state of Kentucky and she also received $50 per annum and her certificate of pension for that amount was issued on July 14, of the year 1858 and it was sent to C. H. BARKLEY at Louisville in the state of Kentucky. The said pensioner himself, William CHAPPELL, was on the Kentucky Roll of Pensions at the rate of $50 per annum and his certificate of pension for that amount was issued on October 18 of the year 1833 and it was then sent to George F. POPE of Shepherdsville in Kentucky.
