RECEIVED ELEVEN HUNDRED PICTURES OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS Dr. Mark V. Wetherington, Director of the organization on Aug. 26, 2000 on behalf of the Filson Club accepted over eleven hundred pictures of Confederate soldiers who had a connection with Kentucky. The pictures were donated by the Orphan Brigade Kinfolk at their annual meeting which was held at the Filson Club with Dr. Wetherington being the main speaker. His topic was, "The Battle for Kentucky's Soul: How the South Won the War After the Shooting Stopped." The audience was spellbound and had many questions after the presentation. The pictures were in individual Confederate gray file folders which in many cases included the following: an interesting story about the Confederate, a picture of the Confederate, a pictures of his wife-if he had a wife-a pictures of his home, a picture of his tombstone. Also included were family charts and ancestral charts of genealogy. The file also included a cover sheet which gave his rank, the company in which he served, the county where he lived when he entered the service, where he was buried, plus who donated the information. Among the fifty people attending the meeting, there were members from California, Oklahoma and Alabama, as well as Indiana and Kentucky. The Orphan Brigade Kinfolk was organized in 1987 at Bardstown, Kentucky. We have had six hundred sixty five to join the organization. The members live all over the United States. Additional copies of the pictures were exhibited at the meeting on heavy cardboards which were two feet high and four feet long, with forty or fifty pictures per board. The "Orphan Brigade" (officially the First Kentucky Brigade, CSA), composed primarily of Kentuckians, was acclaimed by both the North and the South as the best fighting force ever assembled.
