Nancy Davis was Born July 27th of 1804 and Died March 3rd 184. They married August 11th of 1823. Nelson and Nancy acqired land and raised race horeses in Kentucky. Nelson and his brothers built home for themselves and their neighbors and some of these buliding are still standing in 1973. A number of them were in habited by their decendents where the government bought the land and homestead of Nelson and nancy and tore down the buildings on the property which is now Fort Knox.During the civil war, Nelson stationed his older son up in the hills with the race hores when word came that the Northern Army was commingand taking all the good Horses as well as anything else they wanted. They did come and was fed at the home at this time Nelson reported they acted like gentlemen while they was there and the horses were saved. Several Tragedies did occur during these war days however. One which the family still does regret is the capture and the death of John Thomas Rairdon who while standing guard for Nelson Goldsmith Jr.one night, was captured and died in Libbyville prison due to lack of care and food. Nelson and Nancy sold thier Kentucky property except for five racing horses which they took to Minnesota with them and later sold in Iowa for $ 5,000. The family traveled by boat and train enroute to Ottawa,Minn where Nelson's Brother owen had moved in 1860 and built a stone building and manged a store there. The building is still standing. Nine of nelson's children came to Minnesota with them, the other remained in Kentuckysix grandchildren were in the company, five were the childrenof Samuel and Abigail Goldsmith and one the son of Jacob H. Sapp and Milly Goldsmith- William H. Sapp. Nancy carried a basket all the way guarding it closely through Chicago. This basket apparently contained baby clothes for little Owen, which it did, but it also contained $ 10,000 in cash which they planned to use for homes in Minn. This was Copied From the Bullitt County Courthouse.
