His parents were WILLIAM LEVI AND REBECCA ROUSE HARRIS. The people referred to in the diary as Ade, Harry, Joe or Jode, Curt, Jim, Burr, Hassie and Brint refer to Wayne's relatives: Brothers - ADRIAN LEWIS HARRIS, HARRY MALCOM HARRIS (my grandfather), JOSEPH THOMAS HARRIS, CURTIS ANDERSON HARRIS, JAMES ARTHUR HARRIS, WILLIAM "BURR" HARRIS, a sister - TALAHASSA HARRIS PARRISH and a cousin, BRINTON HARRIS. Perhaps some of you can identify other people named. The diary includes entries for part of 1902, 1903 and 1904. This will be a series of postings. January, 1902 Wed. 1 - Will king married. Ade and I were at Ridgaway. We went Tuesday. Thurs. 2 - We came home from Ridgaway and I went with some other boys to serenade Will King that night. Fri. 3 - Harry and I hauled corn and Lewis Mothershead came over that night and we had music. Sat. 4 - Papa bought two shoats from Lee Carroll and Lee Carroll and I went to Ade's and we played music. Jim and family went to Louisville. Sun. 5 - I moved my traps. I went to a temperance sermon at night at Bethel. Hoe and Ade and family spent the day here. Mon. 6 - Ade brought some telephone wire, glasses and bolts also he brought a hog for papa. Tues. 7 - Killed twelve hogs of which two for Curt, six for Earnest and four for papa. Preston & family, Earnest & family, Curt & family, Lee and Harrett. Miss Mothershead married at Mt. Washington at six o'clock. Wed. 8 - Harry, Lee and I were cleaning out the stable. Harry and I went to a dance at William Greenwell. Harry got home at three in the morning and I got home at five. Had a fine time. Also a play at Sam Bass. Jim & family go home from Louisville. Thurs. 9 - Harry, Lee and I were cleaning out stable. Mag Jones was (sic) here today. Fri. 10 - Harry, Lee and I were cleaning out stable. Papa went to Shepherdsville to take the telephone box to be fixed. Sat. 11 - I went to my traps in the morning. Papa got back from Shepherdsville about one o'clock. Burr went to Ade's to stay all night. Lee and I went to George Jones with our music. Mag Jones was here today. Harry & Earle went to Uncle John Hones to stay all night. Sun. 12 - John Burch and I went to William Greenwell and spent the day. Mamma & Papa went to Cousin Brint's to spend the day. Earl and Harry came home from Uncle John Jones. January 1902 Mon. 13 - Harry and I made cider, chopped stove wood, ground meal. Lou Harris came after his sausage mill. Lee Carrolle was up here at night and we had music. Tues. 14 - Harry and I hauled Preston a load of corn of forty-one bushels and a half. Went to saw mill got slabs for Preston. Wed. 15 - Harry, Preston and I went to the saw mill and got lumber and went to the bottom and got corn for hogs. Mr. Tom Hibbs stayed all night. Mrs. Lucy Ann Rayman died at four o'clock. Mrs. Rayman was burried at River View next day at eleven o'clock. Sam McFarland forgot coffin got to Smiths. Thur. 16 - Harry and I hauled three loads of corn up here. Lee Carroll went to Louisville with Ed. King. Mr. Larance Thompson died and burried next day at New Salem. Fri. 17 - Worked on rock wall. We started to pull stalks. Jim's family spent the day. Earle and Mr. Hall came up at night to play seven up. Sat. 18 - Finished rock wall and walk and went to town to get Tom shod. Went over the river at night. Mamma & Papa went to Hassie's. Sun. 19 - I went over the river to Uncle John Jones and Mirtle went with me. Mon. 20 - Burnt the hills over our help were Burr, Earnest, Burt Borders, Jim, Earle, Wylder, Harry, Porter, Papa and Wayne. Mr. Jim Wheeler died. Went to Uncle Nath's to play cards, got to raining at 9 o'clock. Tues. 21 - I went to my traps. Put sawdust over the ice. Mr. Wheeler was buried at Bethel about three o'clock. Tom Carithers had a sale. Lee was where we had music. Wed. 22 - Harry and I went a hunting. We went to Uncle Nathe to help kill a beef. Earnest & family, Cousin Emma O'Neal and daughter Claudie were here to stay all night. Thur. 23 - Harry went down to Ade's in the morning. I crushed corn and ground meal. Mr. Will Hall, Bessie and Aunt Molie spent the day. Ade went over to Solitude on business. Ella and children were here to spend the night. Fri. 24 - Papa went to Sheperhdsville. Robinson is here to night. Ade and family went home to day from here. Sat. 25 - Robinson left this morning. Papa came home this evening from Shepherdsville. I went over after Mirtle Greenwell this evening. Allie Greenwell, Buddie Kulmer, Harry and I went to Will King's at night. Commenced raining at night. Sun. 26 - Bess Hall and I went to Will King's. Ade and Claude were here today they were to meet Jode here on biz. but Jode did not come. It rained awful hard at night, turned cold before morning. Mon. 27 - Harry and I moved the hay in the loft. Harry, John Burch, and I went to Jim's at night to play seven-up. Jim and I beat. Tues. 28 - Harry, Jim and I cleaned the line out up the hill between us and Cousin Brint. Jode bought Charlie Jasper out in store at Solitude. Tom Hardy bought Alex McCrocklin's farm he give $1625. Harry and I went to Will King at night. Wed. 29 - Harry and I went to bottom to give cattle shucks. Ade came here on biz. John Burch came from Louisville. The most ice on trees ever I saw. Trees broke all to pieces. Mirtle and Alma are here tonight. Thur. 30 - Ade and Papa went to Solitude on biz. Mirtle & Alma and I went to Ade's to spend the night. Fri. 31 - Alma & Mirtle and I came from Ade's and spent the day at Preston's and came home and went to Uncle Nathe at night. February 1902 Sat. 1 - Harry, Burr, John Burch and I cleaned trees out of the river road. Harry and I helped John Burch to haul millet seed to the pike and brought a load of corn to the hogs. I went to Will King at night. Harry and John Burch went to Uncle Nathe to play cards. The last night I went to see Mirtle, the horse fell down with me coming home. Jim went after the Dr. for Weaver this morning. Sun. 2 - Ade ws here on biz. Had two doctors Dr. Crenshaw and Dr. Farmer with Weaver. The ground hog saw his shadow today. I went some place today. Jode was here at night and left for Solitude at eight o'clock. Weaver is very low. Mon. 3 - Ade came to see Burr and settle something about going to Solitude. Harry, Earle and I cut Jim some wood. Weaver is no better and Mr. Dent is poorly. Tues. 4 - John Burch went to Louisville to take his last load of millet seed. We brought some calves from the bottom. Mr. Dent is still poorly. Weaver is no better. Wed. 5 - Harrett was here this morning and stayed until dinner. Harry and I shucked corn a while and Harry went to Smithville in the evening to get the mail. Dr. Kirk and Dr. Crenshaw came to see Weaver. John Burch came from Louisville and he turned over just below Mrs. Clark's. Thurs. 6 - I went to Burr's in buggy to take some telephone repairs. Burr brought his hogs up here to go to Louisville. Harry and I went to Burr's to play seven-up and we stayed all night. Harry and John got one game out of six. Fri. 7 - Earnest and Clarence Porter come to cut telephone post. Papa sold 12 hogs of which 3 at $4.90, 4 at $5.40 and 5 at $5.10 - all brought $12.43. Jim sold 12 of which 8 at $5.40 and 4 at $5.10 Harry, Earle and I went to Lee's to have music at night. Ade & Harry went to Solitude. Edna come to Jim's. John Burch & Mr. Hall went to Louisville with hogs. Sat. 8 - Burr took John Burch's mules to Beauchuel's he rode Harry's horse. Uncle Nathe took Effie to town to stay with Mr. Dent he's poorly. Weaver no better. Harry went to Burr's to play cards. John Burch and Mr. Hall came from Louisville and staid at Burr's. Sun. 9 - Curt, & Mr. King, Preston and Tom Parrish went to see Weaver and is no better. Ade is here today. Mon. 10 - Jode had Dr. Overall to come to see Weaver. Harry to water the cattle and he left his horse for Burr to drive after Effie. Mr. Dent is better. Harry went to sit up with Weaver. He got home at four o'clock. Harry & Lou Harris up together. Tues. 11 - Harry slept until 9 o'clock this morning. I went to help water the cattle. Harry, Lee and I cut wood for Jim. Mr. Will Hall & Mr. King set up with Weaver. Mr. Will Clark and Miss Ida Farmer were married at Fairfield. Wed. 12 - I went to Smithville to mail a letter this morning. Harry and I went to Jim's to chop wood. Preston & Hassie came out today. Preston & Lou Harris set up. Weaver is some better. He opened his eyes today for the first time since last Sunday a week. Mr. Ollie Owen & Miss May Alcorn were married at the Parsonage. Thur. 13 - Hassie and I went to see Weaver. Harry, Preston and Papa went to Ade's and bought 9 head of cattle give $100. Harry come home and took two horses and went back to Ade's to take load over to Solitude. An Old Doctor's wife died which lived on Joe Tarry's place. Burr & Tom Parrish set up with Weaver. Fri. 14 - Harry and Curt took a load each for Ade. I drove Ade's cows over for him. Harry staid over to Solitude. Hassie & Preston went home this evening. Lou Harris set up by hisself. Sat. 15 - Harry & Ade come over after two more loads. I went down to help to load up. I brought a cart home which I got from Ade. I brought a keg of molasses from Elmo which Jode left there. Charlie Parrish & Will Hall set up with Weaver. Sun. 16 - Harry come Solitude this morning. I went to Uncle Nathe's and Earle and I went over the river. Lou Harris set up by himself with Weaver. Mon. 17 - We shucked corn and crushed 17 bbl today. Lee Carrolle come up after his saw this morning. It snowed nearly all day. I caught a coon and Wylder brought it up and staid all night. Burr & Effie set up with Weaver. Tues. 18 - Harry and I went to the bottom to water the cattle and give them shucks. Harry, Burr, Jim and I worked on telephone today. Harry and I ate dinner at Burrs. Earle & Carolle helped this evening. Curt ground meal this evening. No one set up with Weaver. Wed. 19 - Harry & I choped stove wood all day. Lee Carrolle cut wood for Jim. Papa & Earnest went to Fairfield. Jim took Edna home today. Aunt Sallie went to see Weaver. No one set up. Thur. 20 - It rained & sleeted today. Earnest come to get a load of straw. Harry & I shucked corn. No one set up with Weaver. Fri. 21 - Harry & I went to help Ade to load up some tools. We brought some things home with us. Mag Jones & Bert, Harry & Ade & I eat dinner with Charlie Long today. Sat. 22 - Earle, Uncle Nath and Mr. Henry came up this morning. Earle went over to Mr. Mothershead to ut patent screws on my bass fiddle. Mr. Hibbs staid all night. Earle and I went to town in the evening and to Lee Carrolle's at night. Ade come over to stop Ben Brumlly from hauling corn. Sun. 23 - Jode come over to see Weaver. Earle and I went to town to church. Ice is breaking up in the river. Weaver is worse sent for the Dr. Crenshaw. Mon. 24 - Harry and I hauled straw and cleaned up mud. The ice is going out. The snow is not quite off. I taken Harrett to Jim's to work. Tues. 25 - Harry, Burr, Papa, Lee, Earlle, Earnest, Curt and I sorted corn today. Mr. David Ellaby died at 2 o'clock. Wed. 26 - Harry, Lee, Earle and I shucked corn in the bottoms today. Mr. Ellaby was burried at Kings Church. Curt went to Louisville for Jode. Hassie & Preston come out this eve. Thur. 27 - Mama & Papa, Preston and Harris went to see Weaver and staid till after dinner. Harry shucked corn. I fixed harness. Harry and I went to meet Jode to get flour but didn't get any. Fri. 28 - Harry & I went to get flour at Earnest's that Jode left there. Cleaned up mud the rest of the day. Papa sold 16 hogs they weighed 1616 lbs got .04 a lb they brought $164.64. A storm come up this evening at half past four and was over at five. MARCH, 1902 Sat. 1 - I went my traps this morning. Had a telephone meeting of all the lines today. Mama & Papa went to Hassie to spend the day and come to Earnest to stay all night. Sun. 2 - We went to Jim's for our breakfast this morning. I went to church at town at night. Mon. 3 - Harry & I hauled a load of wood for Ade to Gentry and loaded a load of clover & millet $ finished out a load with oats to go to Solitude. We pulled it to Jasper's. Papa and the rest of them worked on the telephone. Tues. 4 - We started to Solitude it was raining when we started & we got over there it turned into a snow. The deepest snow I ever saw fell. Vard Crenshaw wife died at 8 o'clock last night. Wed. 5 - Harry & I went to the bottom to give the cattle shucks. Joe Rayman came to get a hog that Bud Stansberry left here. Harry & Jim & I hauled hay & corn for Jim this evening. Vard's wife was burried at New Salem at 11 o'clock. Thurs. 6 - Harry & I went to take Ade's oats to him at Solitude. We brought Ade's mover up and left it at the pike and papa brought a riding plow behind the buggy, and we then all up - it was dark with we go home. Ade sent Weaver some candy. Marry Johnson & Clarence Miller at 2 o'clock at Johnson's..... Fri. 7 - before Xmas played at John Clark Earle and I got - ..66 played at Will Haag " " " " - 1.55 $2.21 (There is a gap in the entries until December 1903) DECEMBER 31, 1903 Dec. 31, 1903 - Joe Owen, Bessie Hall, Ora Lee Owen and I went to Shepherdsville and spent the night at Horbeck's. JANUARY 1904 Fri. 1, 1904 - We all came home and I went over the river to play for a party but didn't play. Sat. 2 - Ora Lee and I went to Taylorsville and it turned awful cold. Joe & May Rouse & Ada Smith spent the night. Sun. 3 - We come from Taylorsville today. Mon. 4 - Harry & Joe & I went to help Jim to finish filling his ice-house, got done by dinner. Went for the mail. Went to play for a party at Will Osborne played till 3 o'clock, Lee & I played. got $2.00 each. Everybody got drunk. Tues. 5 - We never done any thing today but set and not all day. Harry went to Marce Harris' to a card party. Wed. 6 - We killed hogs today and sawed wood at the wood pile. Preston, Earnest, Curt helped. Thur. 7 - We finished hog killing and sawed wood at wood pile. The same force helped. Fri. 8 - We sawed wood at wood-pile all day and on an old oak down by the road. Sat. 9 - Harry, Burr and I fixed fence from gate to river till dinner. I went to Porters after dinner to get some coops to take hens to town. I went to Uncle Bill James at night. Sun. 10 - George Hough & Lee Carrolle were here today. Mon. 11 - Harry went to Louisville with John Burch & Burr with hogs. Joe took Mrs. Pratt to Louisville. Joe got me a box of tobacco. Burr got half of it. I took hens to Porters they brought $40.40. I helped Joe Swearingen with hogs to the pike went on and got the mail. Went to Uncle Nathe's at night with music. Tues. 12 - I went to pull off corn for Will King it rained and we quit work about 2 o'clock. I went to Smithville for the mail. Harry & Joe came from Louisville this eve. Wed. 13 - I went to my traps this morning went for the mail in the eve. Will King was here in the evening. I went to William Greenwell's to play cards at night. Thur. 14 - Harry and I cleaned out stable today got 11 loads. We went to Burrs at night. Fri. 15 - Harry and I finished cleaning out stables today hauled out 8 loads. Harry & Joe & Earle and I went to Sam Smith to a flinch party at night. Mrs. Wigginton died at 12 o'clock tonight. FEBRUARY 1904 Mon. 1 - I helped Burr to chop wood to day went for mail this eve. Tues. 2 - Burr, Curt, Wylder, and I went to break stalk but it was not frozen hard enough. I helped Burr to haul wood with our horses till dinner. I come home and hauled wood at home. Shucked corn a while. Wed. 3 - Harry, Burr, Curt, and I pulled stalks to day till one o'clock. Harry an dI sawed wood in horse lot this eve. Charlie Jones helped us for nothing. Harry went for the mail. Charlie and I sawed some logs at the stable. Thur. 4 - Harry and I sawed wood in mule lot this morning. Hauled a load of corn for the hogs and a load of wood this eve. Charlie commenced choping the rail pile up for $2.00 to day. Fri. 5 - Harry and I hauled Porters a load of hay and a load of oats up here. 2210 lbs of hay. Charlie cut rails here today. Mr. Jim Lee died to day. Sat. 6 - I went to my traps this morning. John and Duke sold 30 cattle - 28 at .04 1/4 and 2 at .4. Had a little dance at Curches to night got $1.75 three of us but Earle did not get any of it. Allay and I got it. Frank Long stayed all night. Sun. 7 - I went to Bethel to the burying o f Mr. Jim Lee. I went home with Ora Lee to dinner. Mon. 8 - Harry, Papa and I cut tress for posts along the top of the hill this morning. Harry and I turned up some of the trees this eve. Joe come home this eve. Charlie Jones is at work at his rail pile. Tues. 9 - Harry and I sawed a tree down the road and sawed it up. Charlie, John and Bert come up after dinner and finished the rail pile. William Greenwell commence of moveing today. Wanted us to play at a party at Port Tompson but the river was past fording and did not go. Wed. 10 - Harry, Papa and I cut the line between us and Cousin Brent from the top of the hill to the old school house by dinner. We finished triming up tress this eve. Van Crenshaw died at 9 o'clock this morning. Thur. 11 - Joe went Burr to break stalk on the Island and Will King's bottoms. Harry and I cut wood at the trees till dinner. We went to the bottoms and hauled oats straw for the cattle and brought a load of hay home for the mules Burr helped us. Van Crenshaw was at 2 o'clock this eve. Fri. 12 - Harry and I helped Burr to cut trees over the river today. Lee Carrolle and Allay and I played for a party at Port Tompson all night got $2.00 each. got home at eight o'clock in this morning. Sat. 13 - Joe and Papa went to town. Harry went to town too. I went over the river this eve spent the night with Alley. John Clark made the deed for Lou Harris place today for $1100.00 Sun. 14 - Alley and I went to Uncle John Jones to day. John and family Barley--Elln a spent the day here. Mon. 15 - Harry went to town to have a tooth pulled. I helped Joe Duckey to take the mules home he bought this morning. Joe and I went to Fairfield this eve after some medicine. Harry takened papa to town to start to Louisville tomorrow. Tues. 16 - Joe and Mamma went to town today. John Clark moved 3 load of corn over today. Harry and I cut on the tree tops today finished the chopping. Minnie Ridgeway and Earnest Hunk were married today. Papa went to Louisville with Budd Stansberry, Ruphus Hall, Budd McGee, and Lizzie Stansberry to get Bank fixtures. Burr and Effie and Wylder stayed all night. Wed. 17 - Harry and I chopped wood this morning Wylder helped us. Harry and I shucked corn this eve. Wylder went to my traps this eve for me. Thur. 18 - I went to my traps this morning and I shucked corn today. Jim brought Papa home about dinner time. Mr. Frank Tomas is poorly. Fri. 19 - Papa and Joe went to Solitude. Mr. Thomas is poorly. Harry and I never done anything today only feed. Burr was here nearly all day. Sat. 20 - Papa and Joe are still in Solitude, Mr. Frank Thomas died at half past eight o'clock this morning. Earl and I went over the river this eve by the bridge. Sun. 21 - Mr. Thomas was burried at New Salem today at 12 o'clock. I came to Solitude this eve and could not get a cross and went back. Mon. 22 - I taken Mertelle to school this morning and there was not no school today. I came to Solitude and helped bring some hogs home which papa bought from Ade for $105. There were 26 head. I went to see some body this eve. Papa come home and stayed an hour or so and went back to Solitude. Joe stayed over there and ground meal. Ade helped home with the hogs today. Will Carruther's baby and some one's baby in Dutchman's hill died today. Tues. 23 - Harry and I went to the bottom to get a load of corn and haul out straw but did not haul the straw to windy. I pulled Johnnie Clark from the foot of the hill to the pike he got started with seed corn he was going to the city. Tom or Joe Owen came and got 40 bu of oats today for $16.00. Harry and I chucked corn this eve. Papa and Joe in Solitude. Wed. 24 - Mamma and Harry went to Earnest to spend the day. Papa came home from Solitude with a very bad sore throat this morning. I went to the bottom to haul out straw for the cattle. Curt, Burr, and Wylder helped me. Curt taken our cow to the bottom. We brought a load of hay home. Burr, Wylder, Effie, Joe stayed all night. Papa rode Ade's horse over. Thus. 25 - Harry taken Ades horse home today. Wylder and I takened my traps up today. Joe and Burr went to Louisville today Burr taken him. Papa is not better. John Clark moved today. Fri. 26 - Harry went to Burr's this morning to see about doing his work, he and family went to Bloomfield. I hauled wood until dinner and trimmed two hay poles and worked on a hen shed. Sat. 27 - Harry went to Burr's to do his work. I hauled a load of saw dust to put on ice. Harry went to town to get Hassie and children. Sun. 28 - Burr and Family came home today Henry Hubbs and Jim Hoagland and Jim H. were here today. Papa is no better. Preston came out this eve. Mon. 29 - Harry, Preston, and I hauled a load of corn for hogs. Will Clemans got 27 bu of oats for $10.80. Harry went to the bottom to let cattle in to straw. Burr went got Joe in Louisville today. Preston, I shucked corn this eve. MARCH 1904 Tues. 1 - Harry and Burr and I hauled out two loads of straw to cattle and brought a load of hay home for mules. Hassie and Preston went home this eve. Harry and I trimmed in the old orchard, Burr come up after some small fruit trees. Wed. 2 - Harry and I hauled out the brush out of the orchard this morning. Harry and I made fence along hog barn this eve. It rained to night. Thur. 3 - Harry and I and Papa measured out a bbl of whisky and finished shucked corn this morning. Harry went to Smithville this eve. I worked on hen pen this eve. Mr. Will Hall was over today. Fri. 4 - Harry and Burr and I hauled the rest of the straw for cattle and a load of shucks and some wet hay out and hauled a load of hay to Porter had 4150 bbl. Harry and I hauled 43 sacks of oats from Burrs up home. Jim and Preston and Earnest and Lee and Duck Stout were out here to sort hogs they all taken some. We never taken them to the bottom yet. Sat. 5 - Harry and Wylder and I taken the hogs to the bottom. Effie went up home with Harry. Joe and Prock Jones, Bert Harris and Hettie Ridgway came over here tonight. Harry went to town with Curt. I went to help finish on telephone line. Sun. 6 - I went to town after dinner at Hassie's it rained nearly all day. Mon. 7 - Harry, Burr, Curt, I shucked corn at hayshed today school commenced at Sugar Valley today. Mr. Jasper was here today. Tue. 8 - Harry and Curt and I shucked corn till dinner. Harden Jones helped a while this morning and all evening at home. Miss Saridlia Owen died this morning about 8 o'clock. Mr. Pal McCartia died about eleven o'clock today. Wed. 9 - Harry, Burr and I hauled out hay out the stack for a load of chucks to cattle. Burr hauled rock. Harry and I fixed fence up the hill from the gait to Burrs and a short string of falling fence along the hill. Thur. 10 - Harry and Burr went to Louisville with a load of Burrs. I ricked stove wood to day it rained awful hard this late. I did Burr's work. Fri. 11 - I worked on hen pen some. I went to meet Burr and Harry it was late. I taken the soar throat this eve. Ade came by here from town this eve. I sold my hides for $1.50 to him. Sat. 13 - Harry and I and John Clark hauled the cattle the rest of the stack of hay today and hauled John a load of hay at 19 ft long 9-2 wide 4-4- high. I came home awful sick with soar throat and head ache. Mamma and Papa went to town this morning. George Owen came over for oats to day. Sun. 13 - I was sick in bed nearly all day. Burr and Effie stay here while mamma and pap were gone. They started home this eve and spring of buggy broke and they stoped at Earne for the night. Mon. 14 - Harry got in the rest of the wood in to day. Mamma and Papa come home to day. Effie went home this eve. Burr went to Shepherdsville to day. Jode came in this eve. Tues. 15 - Harry and I went to the bottom to get one of our cows and Burr helped us bring her home. I covered the hen shed. Charlie Long and Marie Harris were here this eve. Wed. 16 - Harry and I taken a load of hay over to Solitude to day had 2240 lbs. on. Thur. 17 - We worked some on the fence round the garden and yard and set two gate posts and set up post at the end of hog pen for palen fence. Sat. 19 - Harry cleaned up around the cow stalls. I went to the bottom to sale the hogs and, help Charlie Long to load a load of hay. I went to Smithville this eve. Harry went to Solitude his eve. He had 2870 lbs. of hay. Sun. 20 - I done Burrs work this morning. I went away this eve. Mon. 21 - Harry and I shucked corn this morning. I went to town to take the marker to be fixed and got Short shod.
