CONFEDERATE KENTUCKY TROOPS 6th Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Infantry 6th Infantry Regiment was organized at Cave City, Kentucky, in November, 1861, and included in Cofer's 1st Kentucky Infantry Battalion. Its members were raised in the counties of Nelson, Spencer, Hardin, Franklin, Barren, Green, Allen, Anderson, Bullitt, and Simpson. It became part of the Orphan Brigade or Louisville Legion. This regiment lost 108 killed and wounded at Shiloh, sustained 18 casualties at Baton Rouge, then was active at Vicksburg. During the war it was assigned to General Hanson's, Helm's, and J.H. Lewis' Brigade. It fought with distinction at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, then saw action in the Atlanta Campaign. In the fall of 1864 the unit was mounted, and aided in the defense of Savannah and the campaign of the Carolinas. It lost seventeen percent of the 269 engaged at Murfreesboro and 220 saw action at Chickamauga. The unit totalled 263 men and 221 arms in December, 1863. The 6th surrendered with the Army of Tennessee on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Martin H. Cofer and Joseph H. Lewis, Lieutenant Colonel William L. Clarke, and Majors Thomas H. At the same time he received the last blessing which is always given by the Catholic church to her members when in immediate danger of death, as then he was very sick and might die any day. Father O'Duignan. Interment was in the cemetery there. Casket bearers were Marion Fishback, Gabe Logsdon, Jep McDaniel, Dave Baber, Willie McDaniel and Roy Logsdon. She was born near Bardstown in Hardin County, Kentucky, on April 11, 1867, and was the daughter of Gabriel and Cynthia Jane Pearl. She came with her parents and the rest of the family to Missouri when she was eight years old and moved on what was then known as the Patterson place east of Monticello. In 1890 they moved to the Turner place where she spent the remainder of her life until last fall when she came to live with her niece. Mrs. Jake Pearl, where she resided until her death, Feb. 11, 1941, at the age of seventy-three years and ten months. She leaves to mourn her passing one sister, Lucy Jane Logsdon, a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. These who preceded her in death were her father and mother, three sisters Mrs. Rosa Frances Grable, Mrs. Mary Sarriett Jenkin and Suphronia who died in infancy. The three brothers were Jasper, who resided with her until his death in June, 1938, James Leonard who passed away in 1909, and Richard who died in infancy. Notes for MARY MARGARETTA PEARL: Obituary of Mary Margaretta Pearl Mrs. Cassius Bates buried Providence Mrs. Mary Margaretta Bates died Saturday, Feb. 27, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jim McClain, who had cared for her during her declining years. Mrs. Bates was born in Nelson County, Kentucky, November 6, 1856, a daughter of Priscilla and Matthew Pearl. She came to Lewis County with her parents at the age of 20 years. She was united in marriage to Cassius Bates on February 3, 1898. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Jim McClain. The daughter, with her husband, and three children, Bates, Henry and Joy Rose, survive. Also surviving Mrs. Bates are a brother and a sister, Jacob Pearl of Canton, and Mrs. Kate Howard of Williamstown, and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Bates was a member of a family of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death except the brother and sister named. She was converted and united with the Providence Baptist church, where she held membership until the time of her death. Although blind for three years and bedfast for a year, she was cheerful and always glad to visit with her relatives and friends when they came to visit her. Funeral services were conducted at Providence Baptist church, Williamstown, Monday, March 1, at 11:00 a.m., by the pastor Rev. Walter C. Burk. Singers were Maxine Lasswell, Georgia Mae English, John Smith and Hurley Carlisle. They were accompanied at the piano by Mattie Ford. Pallbearers were Joe Lillard, J. J. Spurgeon, Jep McDaniel, Earle Bevans, Russell McClain and Elza Hanley. Catherine Pearl Howard, the daughter of Matthew and Priscilla Pearl was born in Lewis County, (Editor's Note: Catherine Pearl Howard was born in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky. Information contained in her obituary was incorrect) Feb. 6, 1863. She died Aug. 19, 1946, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry N. Tompkins, in Rochester, Minn., after several months illness. Her age was 83 years, 6 months and 13 days. She was the last of five children. On October 21, 1896, she was united in marriage to Samuel P. Howard. To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters. One daughter, Ella Mae, died in infancy and the husband died 12 years ago. Mrs. Howard made a profession of faith in Christ 36 years ago, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Providence Baptist Church during the pastorate of Rev. F. M. Baker. She was loyal in her devotion to the church and continued in the fellowship until the end. Mrs. Howard had been a resident of Williamstown and vicinity for many years, spending the winter months, however, of late years with her daughter in Rochester, Minn. The decedent leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Mrs. Harry N. Tompkins, of Rochester, Minn.; two sons, Victor of Dyer, Ind., and Dewey, of Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Besides these many more distant relatives and friends will cherish her memory. Funeral services were conducted from Providence church Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m., by Rev. F. M. Baker, pastor of the First Baptist Church, of LaGrange. Those who furnished the music were Mrs. Georgie Mae Todd, Miss Maxine Lasswell, John Smith and Paul Watson, with Mrs. Mattie Ford at the piano. He was married to Catharine Pearl October 21, 1896, and to this union were born four children, Mrs. Harry Tompkins of Rochester, Minn., Dewey of Chicago, and Victor of Williamstown, and one daughter who died in infancy. Of his brothers and sisters only one brother, John Howard, of Canton, and one half-brother, Joe Briggs, of Saratoga, Calif., survive him. There are six grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his death. Mr. Howard became a member of Providence church in early manhood and has always been a faithful and consistent christian, bearing with courage and patience two years of the most intense pain it is given the human body to suffer. He was a kind and devoted husband and father and a man whom to know was to love and respect. The large number of friends from various communities in which he had lived attending the funeral bore testimony to the place he held in the hearts of his neighbors and friends. The funeral sermon was preached at Providence Monday afternoon by Rev. T. Elmer Jones of Canton and burial was in the Providence cemetery. Pall bearers were Jas.
