LUTES was born in 1843 in Nelson Co., KY. He died on 29 Aug 1921 in Bullitt County, KY. Kentucky Death Index Death Certificate is vol. 21 and cert. 16692 The following artilcle was published in the book, History and Families of Bullitt County, Kentucky. The book was published in 1997 by the Turner Publishing Company of Paducah, Kentucky. LUTES, Asa M. Lutes, born in 1843 in Nelson County, was the son of Charles and Lucinda Miller Lutes. He married Rebecca E. Dacon, of Shepherdsville, on Oct. 1, 1872. Rebecca's parents were William and America (Weller) Dacon. After their marriage, the young couple settled on a farm on Ridge Road up on a hill from the Salt River. They had seven children: an infant daughter, born and died in 1873, Preston, born in 1874, Lela, born in 1876, Elbert, born in 1879, Evelyn, "Evie", born in 1881, Henry, born in 1886, and Geraldine, born in 1897. Asa and his family farmed the "bottom" ground close to the river. Once, when Henry was a little boy, his daddy gave him and his cousins some pumpkin seeds that they were to plant among the corn. Apparently they thought this was going to be too big a job,so instead of doing as they were told, they planted all the seeds in a little space along the river bank. All was well until the pumpkin plants failed to appear where they were supposed to, and instead came up in a big clump in the wrong spot.. Needless to say, this never happened again, because the boys were soundly reprimanded. The farm work was very hard, but there was often time for such pastimes as fishing, fox hunting and 'coon hunting. As the children grew to adulthood, they married and most continued to farm. Lela married Richard "Jonce" Clark in 1895, and they had three children. Edith was born in 1897 and Marion and Milton were born in 1899. When the twins were 11 years old, Marion was hurt very badly, but he made his brother promise not to tell his parents for fear that it would worry them. By the time Dr. Overall was called, it was too late, and Marion died. Edith and her brother attended Victory Shcool, which was a log cabin. The teacher was Mr. Charlie Ridgway who was also a preacher. Some of the other teachers were Myrtle Greenwell and Alma Jones. The teachers were paid directly by the parents. When children got thristy, they drank from a bucket and dipper right out of the spring. Edith remembered as a little girl going to square dances. She also remembers "Grandpap", Asa Lutes, playing the violin by ear and her Aunt Geraldine would dance. "Grandma" Rebecca always had tall containers full of "sweet cakes". Her grandparents horse was "Old George". Henry grew up to marry Ethel Lena King in 1909. They had nine children: Beatrice, Mildred, Larry (deceased), W. A., Coolidge (deceased), Kenneth, Ralph and Neva. Henry died in 1978 and Ethel deid in 1979, but several of their children, grndchildren and great grandchildren continue to live in Bullitt County. (There is another story from the book by Mrs. Kenneth Lutes, in a notes section for Kenneth Lutes. Kenneth is the son of Henry Francis Lutes.) He was married to Rebecca A. (E.) DEACON (DACON) (daughter of William DEACON (DACON) and America Ann WELLER) on 1 Oct 1872 in Shepherdsville, Bullitt Co.., KY. Rebecca A. (E.) DEACON (DACON) was born in 1849. She died on 12 Aug 1931 in Bullitt County, KY. Kentucky Death Index Death Certificate is vol. 31 and cert. 18676 Rebecca's middle initial is given as "E." in the book, History and Families of Bullitt County, Kentucky. Her last name is Dacon instead of Deacon. The surname was recorded both ways for much of the family's life in Kentucky. ************************ Lela Arp LUTES was born in 1876 in Bullitt County, KY.
