Adkins Dies Retired Minister, Ex- Confederate Solder, Stricken and Expires in Short Time The Rev. B. F. Adkins, 79, retired Baptist minister and ex- Confederate soldier, died suddenly at his home in the Friendship community in the western part of the county Thursday morning of last week at 10:30 o'clock. He apparently had been in good health until his death, which was attributed to heart disease. Mr. Adkins came to Anderson county from Hancock county in his boyhood. He joined the ranks of the Confederates when a mere lad of fifteen years and served two years under General Longstreet. For nearly fifty years, he was a minister of the Baptist church, serving in Anderson, Mercer, Boyle, Spencer and Bullitt counties. He was ordained as a preacher in 1875. He organized many Sunday Schools and churches, among the number being Sand Spring church, which was organized in 1901 and 37 charter members, and which now reports a membership of 435. At the 1927 meeting of the Baptist Association, he was elected to preach the introductory sermon at the 1928 session of the new Hopewell church. Aside from his ministerial labors, Mr. Adkins found time to conduct a farm and was also zealous in the performances of these duties. Mr. Adkins was twice married, his first wife being Miss Eliza J. Leathers, daughter of the late Alford and Eliza S. Leathers. The wedding was solemnized August 24, 1871, by Rev. S. S. Perry. Children living of this union are: Mrs. William Hahn, Mrs. Math Sweasy and Mrs. C. R. Mathley, of this county; the Rev. John L. Adkins, of Perryville; J. T. Adkins, of Nelson county; W. L. Adkins, of Shelby county;l Oscar F. Adkins, cashier of the Farmers' Bank of Van Buren; Alex Adkins, of the county and Elmer Moore Adkins of Louisville. Also surviving are his second wife, who was Mrs. Allie Hopgood, to whom he was married August 13, 1914, by Rev. Garrett Reed; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Longest, of Iowa, and a brother, Joe Adkins, of Hawesville, this state. Funeral services were held at Friendship church Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. W. D. Moore, a life-long friend and co- worker in the Master's cause, assisted by Dr. William Stallings, of the Lawrenceburg Baptist church, the Rev. Bert Gould, of Sand Spring church, and the Rev. Elmo Royalty. Interment was in the Leathers burying ground. Casket bearers at the funeral were the six sons of Rev. Adkins. -- Anderson News. (Fri Feb 10, 1928)
