"Christian Advocate," 13 December 1855, Vol. 19, no. 50, p. not given; published by R. Stevenson and F.A. Owen for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Photocopy supplied 18 November 2002 to Linda Masden Vixie by Lambuth University Library, Memphis Conference Archives, 705 Lambuth Blvd., Jackson, TN 38301. Sister Nancy Johnson, wife of Brother Elisha F. Johnson, was the daughter of John Masdon-–born in the State of Pennsylvania. At the age of four years, she came with her parents to Kentucky, and settled in Bullitt County; and, when quite a small girl, her father died and her widowed mother was left with a dependent family of eight or nine children. Soon after this, an incident occurred which showed the spirit of the child. Her mother was taken sick, indeed, unto death. This greatly troubled the mind of Nancy, and she commenced praying for her mother. But it soon occurred to her mind her own sins were not forgiven her, and, with deep sorrow, she pleaded faithfully the merits of a Saviour’s death, till the Lord said, “Thy sins are all forgiven thee;” and she was made happy in a Saviour’s love. To know Sister Johnson was to love her. She was one of the excellent of the earth. In her sphere she may have had her equals, but never her superiors. On Dec. 26, 1838, she was united in marriage to her now sorrow-stricken husband, with whom she lived in the consummation of that bliss which is peculiar to the married in the Lord until the day of her death, Oct. 4, 1855, at the house and home of her companion, in Hancock Co., Ky., once cheerful and happy-–a home that welcomed, fed, and lodged so many of the Lord’s servants-–so many of the friends of her Master. Sister Johnson was emphatically a good woman, worthy the affection of her husband, and the confidence of her brethren. Much that is interesting might be said of the manner of her death: suffice it to say, as she neared the Jordan, she said to her husband, “My work is done: for me there is laid up a bright crown in glory.” She closed her own eyes, shut her lips, folded her hands upon her breast, and quietly passed away.
