Washington,June 1 - While our little town and community are still under the gloom and despair of the recent tragic deaths of C.A. Porter and John F. Smith, another shock, striking the hearts of the same sufferers, came Saturday morning (29 May 1937) in the death of Walter Porter, from injuries he received when a tractor turned over on him. His was one of the happiest dispositions I ever knew - always a smile and cheery greeting to everyone. An upright, honest, industrious citizen and a severe loss to any community. Although his home was in Jefferson County, his family and church affiliations were here and he and his family were of us. In the loss of these two brothers, our church and community are losing a vital part of their constituency. Feneral services were held at the Methodist chruch at 2 P.M., Monday by a former pastor, Rev. S.J. Henniger, who also preached the funeral, six weeks ago, of C.A. Porter. He was assisted by the pastor, Rev. C.K. Dickey. The many friends and the abundance of floral offerings were a telling tribute of his life spent among us. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Carrithers Porter, one son, Carl Vernon, his mother, Mrs. Fannie Porter, two brothers, Tom and Lucian, three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Wigginton, Mrs. Aileen Smith and Miss Georgia. A large crowd attended the burial service at Resthaven.
