Washington, Oct. 24 - Although this following death was reported briefly on the exact date, we as a friend and neighbor of this remarkable woman would add some personal facts and also tributes to her memory. Mrs. Fannie I. Porter passed away at home in Mt. Washington on October 13. She had a fall 11 years ago and broke her hip which caused her to be an invalid and she also had another fall in August of this year from which she never recovered. She was only in bed one week. She bore her suffering, which was intense, gently. She was born May 19, 1859 in Mt. Washington and lived here all her life with the exception of a few years at Brooks Station. She was loved by all who knew her. I have heard several say, "She was a real Christian, and she lived it." She was very quiet and was always doing something for others, and since she had been an invalid, she had pieced quilts for her children and grandchildren, which she prized very highly. She united with the Mt. Washington Methodist Church in early childhood and as long as she was able she was in her place when time came to worship. She taught her children to love their church and to be loyal and she certainly did succeed in her efforts. She was united in marriage to Mr. Frank C. Porter in 1877, who preceded her to the grave in August 1923, fifteen years ago. To this union were born ten children, three of whom died in infancy, two sons, Clarence, who was accidently killed in an automobile wreck April 12, 1937, and Walter, May 29, 1937, from an accident with his tractor. She stood the shocks much better than some of we younger ones and only said,"It is awful hard but God knows best." Five children survive, Mrs. H.P. Wigginton, Mrs. Sammy Smith, Miss Georgia Porter; Messrs. Tom and Lucian Porter; seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Nick McArthur, of Louisville, and two brothers. T.H. and Lee Parrish, of Mt. Washington. Funeral srvices were conducted at house on Sunday, October 16 at 1:45 p.m. by Rev. Paul Horner, of Louisville, the husband of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lillian Aileen Porter Horner, and at the Mt. Washington Methodist Church at 2 p.m. by her pastor, Rev. C.K. Dickey, and former pastor, Rev. D.R. Peak; also Rev. R.L. Puckett, pastor of the local Baptist church. The music was furnished by Miss Demetra Fisher; Messrs Edgar Fisher, Charles Franklin Swearingen and Horace McGee, accompanied by Miss Alma Dean Fisher at the piano, who took Mrs. Edna McGee's place on account of illness. Interment was in the Mt. Washington Cemetery. The services at the grave were dismissed with prayer by Brother Miller, pastor of Kings Baptist Church. Her pallbearers were her grandsons and flower girls were granddaughters. (This notice ended with a poem, untitled, and signed - Mt. Washington Correspondent.)
