Mathias Smock was born in Bullet CO, KY, September 5, 1818, and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Teson, Monday, December 20, 1909, aged 91 years, 3 months, and 15 days. The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday morning at 11:00 conducted by the Rev. C.M. Benight of the St. Joseph Baptist Church, and the remains were interred at Groves cemetery. At the age of 24 he with his brother, James Smock, came to Northwest Missouri and settled in Holt County. In 1854 he united with the Florida Creek Missionary Baptist Church of Nodaway County and at once began an active camp meeting and historical campaign for his church. Mr. Smock joined the Union Army in 1861 and rendered valuable services to his country until the end of the war.
