KY Will Book D p. 523 An Inventory of the personal estate of JOHN DUNN dec'd remaining at the death of his wife AMY DUNN was returned 20 Dec 1852 by LORENZO HOGLAND and A. J. FIELD. WILLIAM R. THOMPSON, Admr. of the above estate is hereby directed not to sell the horses, stock, farming utensils, household and kitchen furniture belonging to the estate of said DUNN at the death of his wife AMY P. DUNN but said Admor. is directed and authorized to permit the same to remain upon the farm the former residence of said DUNN for the use of any of his children or desendants who may reside upon said farm and said admr. shall bear responsibility for so doing. Given under our hands as Legatees under the will of said JOHN DUNN this first day of December 1851 (signed) WM. R. THOMPSON ANN BALL SARAH THOMPSON MARY E. MENEFEE FRANCIS J. DUNN D. W. JONES immediately following: Glenbrooke Wisconsin, 13 Dec 1850: Dear Col. (?) Yours of last month has this day came to hand and I speed a reply - Divide the negroes as you think best. I give ANN all my interest in them and authorize you to draw that interest for her but remember they must be regularly drawn none of the family are entitled any particular negro and they cannot so have it they must take their chances or have them appraised and apportioned by order of court on this head I will alone undertake to act or control your action and I hope you will strictly attend. It is exceedingly questionable whether I will or not go to California in the Spring and doubtful when I am in Kentucky at present. I have large amounts of property and cannot sell my debts press me and I have not a cent to spare visiting however pleasant it might be to me my only object is going to California would be to realize sufficient money to pay off my obligations. If I was clear of debt I should now go. I have now lost about $3000 in California out fits which greatly embarasses me. I have not received one dollar back the Truth is I cannot go to California unless I can get an extension of time on some of my obligations and whether I can or not I have yet to learn. posibly however I may make a sale of property for sufficient money to meet their claims if I do so I shall go to California unless the sale should be sufficiently large to pay off all my obligations ( I have a faint hope of this) in that case remain in Wisconsin you perceive what takes me then if I ever go out I will not return again untill I have sufficiency of money for all my wants and that sum would be large. I possibly will send out by my nephew some ten head of Young blood horses some half Blood durham cows and two Durham Bulls. Do not get my waggons made for me if I need any I will get them here and if I go to California will endeavor to come and see you before I go as it may be the last time we may meet on earth if I go I shall take SARAH to Arkansas a short time and shall then arrange to leave her at Harrisburg Springs for the benefit of CLARA'S education but if I go and we meet in ----- ---- that matter should I go to California I shall go to make money nothing shall divert me from my business. I will forget that I have a heart and assess and wring men from the world as they have from me. I shall settle down in my profession at St. Francisco where the ablest Lawyers are to bee found and if I cannot work my way with them I wish to starve. In my profession I can make as much money as any one in the State of California - all friends are well, SARAH & CLARA desire to be remembered to you and yours. Believe me as I trust you will ever find me your friend and Brother. (signed) FRANCIS J. DUNN P. S. COL. JONES says he will send on instructions about his negroes.
