Everything is quiet now but in a month the woods of Butler will be full of candidates Even the $800,000.00 given by Uncle Sam to Kentucky won’t pay the interest on the state debt 20 years. Poor Old Kentucky The silver in a dollar is now worth 70cts., that is to say it is like Grover Cleveland’s chance to be president, some what under par. The Democrats want a man who can carry New York. We very cheerfully point them to a man who can, did and will win again. - Benjamin Harrison Last week the call for the Republican county convention fixed the date for the 8th. when it should have been the 14th., county court day. See call this issue. Every Republican in the county should attend the Republican Convention to be held at Morgantown, the second Monday, March 14, 1892. Come out and lets start the ball rolling. It has been said that the Louisiana Lottery has for years contributed to the Democratic campaign fund. When a law passed by the Republican Congress crushed that monster in solutions of plunder, it took all the winds out of the Democratic sails. David B Hill, who at the writing seems to have a rinch on the Democratic nomination for President, is the well known tool of Tammany Hall, a monster combination in Yew York City organized for the purpose of political plunder. Well may the Democrats tremble for they are in the clutches of the Tammany Tiger. Every stick of timber cut from our hillsides and valleys is protected by a high Tariff against the vast Forrest of Canada and other countries. Were that Tariff removed, as the Free Traders propose to do, the values of every tree in our country, would depreciate from 20 to 50 per cent. Do we want the Free Traders to control? Republicans are for an honest dollar, be it paper, gold or silver. If it be silver they want a dollars worth of silver not 70ct. If it be gold, they want a dollars worth but they do protest against one kind of dollar being worth 70cts. and the other kind 100 cts. in the markets of the world. We want the silver dollar as good as the gold dollar. The meanest thing ever did by a member of congress, outside of the open threat to the Government was recently done by a Democrat to the present Congress. A bill was introduced to stop all pensions drawn by Union Soldiers not residents of the country. The soldier who lost an arm, leg or an eye for your country and flag is to be deprived of simply because he is not a voter. This bill is an index to Democratic ________ to every soldier were it possible to do without______ votes. The only reason the Democratic Party does not openly resist every pension law is because they fear ______ of the soldiers and not because they are at heart with the soldiers friends. Column Three JAMES G. BLAINE There is no name on earth so universally loved by Republicans as the name of James G. Blaine. Through a long eventful period of our country’s history he has been faithful and true to Republican principles. Through many a fierce storm he has grandly, nobly born the banner. He has won for himself a worldwide fame and his superior brilliancy and statesmanship is admired wherever civilization exists. For many years the ambition of his great heart was like Henry clay’s to be president; a place by tireless devotion to the nation’s interest merited. But when nearing the goal of his souls desires a fated combination on trivial accidents forever blasted his hopes. If____ hand had never____ or Delmonico had never been it would have been President Blaine. But defeat did not cloud his glory and fame nor lessen his ardor and zeal for his nation’s welfare. For months thousands of hearts have yearned for another opportunity to vote for Blaine. But years of earnest devotion and labor for his nation was telling upon this great man, and with departing health went the ambition of his earlier life, the hope to be president; and he announced that his name will not be presented to the Convention. The rest of his days will be spent in peace and long after those who have sought THE EGG INDUSTRY But few people stop to think about the vast number of eggs that are sold every year in this country, but strange as it may seem, the farmers of our land realize more from eggs every year than they do from the entire wheat crop in the United States. Until the McKinley bill was passed eggs came into our market from foreign countries free, and competed with, and cut down the price of American eggs; but there is now a ____ of five cents on the dozen, so if a foreigner brings his eggs to our market, before he can compete with our farmers, he must pay five cents on every dozen of his eggs, hence the American has the entire market to himself. From the moment the McKinley Bill became a law, eggs advanced and the poor people who have them to sell, have reaped the benefits, which has been thousands of dollars saved to the common people of this country. Are the people ready to let the Free Traders take the tariff off, and take five cents a dozen less for their eggs! If so, vote the Democratic ticket. Most Democrats deny that they are free traders but actions speak louder than words. By their fruits we shall know them. On the present Congress which is largely Democrats the only Tariff Bill of consequence has been to put wool on the free list. Mr. Springer, chairman of he Ways and Means Committee, says the Democrats will not pass a sweeping Tariff bill at this session of Congress, but will pass the bill putting wool on the free list as evidence of what they would do were the Senate and the President Democratic. If this be true, and that if it is there can scarcely be a doubt in the language of Henry Watterson “ the Democratic party is a Free Trade party or it is nothing.” Do we want Free Trade in the saddle? The Democratic Coinage Committee in Congress has decided to report a bill for Free Coinage of silver, but just before this was done, the Kentucky Legislature voted to sidetrack a silver resolution. Our Democratic Friends are getting into a terrible mess on the silver question. Of course if the legislature had known or thought the Democrats in congress would pass a free silver bill they would have voted for it too, but they didn’t understand each other and they are getting things mixed. English papers are denouncing James G. Blaine more vigorously ___ ____ _____ _____ that his party is ______American, and bring ____ _____ and frequently twists the lions tail and makes him growl. Column Four CAMP FIRE COLUMN Berry Lick, Ky I wish to say to all my old comrades that I am still alive and think of you all often and wonder whether you are living or dead. I think of all the many cold nights you and I stood on a picket waiting and watching for the enemy; and comrades are we all standing on the picket today, waiting and watching for the enemy? If not we should be, for a greater enemy than the Southern Confederacy is making war against the human family-that is, the enemy of souls. I trust that all of my comrades are standing at their posts with weapons at hand and when our time is out and we are discharged, I trust we may hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful soldiers enter into my joys and sit down on my throne.” I want to see you all someday dressed in the uniform of glory. I ask all my comrades to try and meet me in the better world. I shall try to meet you all there. I am as ever your friend and comrade, G.W. Chandler, Co.A, 11th. Ky Vol Inft. An example of Democratic vision of the tariff is presented in the conclusion of the Ways and Means Committee. The decision is to send a bill to the House providing for a twenty-percent reduction of the duties on woolen manufacturers from the rates of the McKinley law. This they consider sufficient protection to the manufacture, but to make this reduction they propose to put raw wool on the free list, thus leaving the sheep raisers and wool growers of the country without protection. All the protection they leave on wool is in the interest of the manufactures and yet they have been accusing the Republicans for years of ____ ____ ____tariff in the _____ ____ _____. They do work in _____protected ______ manufactures interests but not at the expense of the producer of the raw material. -- Commercial Gazette District Convention Call The Republicans of the 3rd. Congressional District of Kentucky are called to meet at Bowling Green, Ky, March the 29th. 1892 for the purpose of electing two alternates to the National Republican convention, which meets at Minneapolis June the 7th. 1892. The chairman of the various County Commissions in the District will call County Conventions which will send delegates to the District Convention. Since the State Convention meets the 30th. of March, I suggest that delegates to the District Convention be also made delegate to the State Convention and to go on from Bowling Green to Louisville. If possible I will make arrangements for reduced railroad rates from Bowling Green to Louisville. W.S. Taylor, Chairman Republican Dist. Committee The Republicans of Butler county are called to meet in _____ Convention at Morgantown, Ky., March the 14, 1892 for the purpose of sending delegates to the District Convention which meets in Bowling Green, Ky., March 28, 1892, as well as to send delegates to the State Convention with meets in Louisville March the 30th, 1892 and to transact other necessary business. The object of the District and State Conventions is to send delegates to the Republican National Convention which meets in Minneapolis, June the 7, 1892; J. T. Rivers Chairman County Convention When Hill a high headed manager by force and fraud stole the New York senate, Democrats chuckled and applauded, but when he adopted the same tactics to get the Democratic nomination, the winced and kicked vigorously, but then____ the birds came home to rest. Our legislature drags on doing nothing. These salons will doubtless play there until the state_____from the school fund the $500,000.00 to U.S. government generously gave the state and until they get a large share of it in their pockets. Column Five EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT A. Thatcher, Editor All communications intended for this Department should be addressed to A. Thatcher, Morgantown, Ky. Supt. Thompson writes that he wants to be at our institute if he does not get to the county sooner. We would prefer to have him with us during Institute, because all of the teachers and quite a number of trustees and patrons would get to meet him and hear his address. We receive about 50 letters annually from Institute whose prices are from $10 to $100 per week. It is our idea that we have enough home talent to make a successful Institute and the fees collected therefrom, will purchase books containing the lifetime experience of the best teachers and thinkers of our land, and that these books are worth infinitely more than a few short lectures. Of course we have no objections to lectures by competent persons on vital subjects, but we can better afford to do without foreign instructions than our library. Last summer every teacher in attendance was placed on program and either said something or “begged to be excused”. By this _____ we feel that not a few teachers discovered their latent power and entered their schools with a new feeling that they could and would do something more than “hear” recitations. Let us hear from you teachers, shall we have an instructor or more books? Someone is doing nothing about the common school building (?) of this place which as you well know is in bad condition and needs repairing. Of course another tax can’t be voted in this district, and we cannot rent the Seminary building without money. There has been some talk of purchasing the Seminary and lot. If this is to be done it should be attended to at once. Have you thought about it? If not commence now and come to some conclusion about the matter and suggest your plan. Shall we buy the campus or build a new house or houses? It is our unpleasant duty to announce the death of Hon. Thos. W. Harvey, author of a series of Grammars, Readers and Spellers. His is probably the most popular grammar published. Although a very busy man we know from experience, he was never too busy to help a teacher over a hard place. The world is made better by such men living in it. One by one the authors of text- books are joining the silent majority, yet their good work gone on forever. GRAMMAR 1. What is a letter? A syllable?
