Big Crowd! Grand Success! ______________ Never in the history of Morgantown was there gathered within her corporate limits such a crowd for size, for intelligence, for good behavior, and for good looking people, as assembled here at the Soldier’s Reunion, on the glorious Fourth of July. The number is estimated at or near 7,000. The weather was fine and pleasant and at an early hour the people began to come in troops and battalions in every conceivable way. Excursion boats from up and down the river were loaded to their guards and had to haul in the stage planks and refuse to take on any more passengers. Several hundred were thus disappointed at Rochester and other points and did not get to attend. The exercise in the Court House yard where a grandstand had been erected and seats arranged, were most successfully carried out to the letter and highly enjoyed by the vast throng. Ringing and patriotic speeches were made by Co. W.A. Helm, Z.O. King and Jasper Toms, Capt. Howard, Judge Holmes, and Judge E.P. James, all of which were attentively listened to and highly enjoyed. The music and singing of patriotic songs by the Morgantown Glee Club was an especially attractive feature of the exercises and always caused a rush for the grandstand. The splendid good order which prevailed throughout the day was the remark of everyone not a jeer, not a clash, not a boisterous word and no intoxicated person! All was peaceable, lovely, grand, magnificent. At the campfire in the afternoon the following officers of the Association were elected: J.T. Rives, President W.O. Wallace, Vice President Rev. Truman, Chaplin (Re-elected) J.W. Coleman, Adjutant Zick Taylor, Commissary By a decisive vote Cromwell was the lucky winner as the place for the meeting of the next Reunion, July 4, 1907. Give us another Reunion or something just as good! NOTES The patriotic spirit of the day was a great help to the Soldier’s Monument fund and the solicitors for same reaped a rich harvest. Of course Uncle Jim Tom was a busy man that day and now he is happy. Did you EVER see as many pretty women? Did you ever see as many handsome men? Well, we’d feed them better, next time. The preparations for dinner were a little underestimated. This was the only unpleasant feature . Well, what to our merchants and business men say now? Next time Uncle Jim goes to them for help for a big gathering maybe they’ll do a little better. Peanuts! Popcorn! Chewing gum and Candy! Col. W.A. Helm’s speech was the hit of he day. It was a hummer. Let’s be good and try to get another big gathering here this fall. Of course we will be more careful about the dinner next time. The merchants had no kick coming when they had counted their cash. See the new school ads. He was sick only a few days till God called him to that beautiful home of eternal rest. No more will his father and mother see his sweet face or hear his prattling tongue. No more will he visit his dear grandmother to cheer her heart but is waiting to greet them when God in his divine wisdom sees fit to call them home. Weep not for this little one, for all that’s bright must fade, the brightest still the fleetest. All that’s sweet was made to be lost when sweetest. But I am here you see jest as natural as life. Some of you may think I ought to look a right smart older it has been so long since I appeared, but you see I was old looking to begin with. Well, since I writ my last letter I hav bin about a right smart chance. Been to the Home ___, been entertainin’ friends, back to the Reunion and so forth and so on and in fact I guess that is one reason I have not been keeping up my ritins to the newspaper, but I think the rush is about over now and I intend to get down to my rittin and keep up my letters for I am told they are terribly missed in the paper. I am livin on the shady side of easy street now. I have just bundance of vegetables and oceans of blackberries in my old field. I had a big cobbler pie the other day and invited Joe to take dinner with me knowin as how he loved blackberry pie but I was terribly taken aback when he wouldn’t tech a bite ot it. I seys Joe what on earth ails you, why don’t you eat some of my blackberry pie.” He juest shook his hed and sed … ___ sing” Well that almost killed me and I had a great mind to smash the whole pie in his face. Some people are awful frady of bein taken off before their time comes. As for me I ain’t afraid of nothing that way sceptin snails. Sometimes I think I believe in tat doctrine that “what is to be will be” and that there is nothing in nothing” I see so many brite prospects fail and so many honery things succed. But still this may be a very dangerous doctrine and I aint goin to urge it on anybody. God helps those who hep themselves and one great truth ___ through it all—the wages of sin is death—not only in the world to come but in this world. The man who is fat and sleek and roles in the delites and pleasures of sin will sooner cry later pay deerly for it all. And I hav seen several striking examples of this lately. For instance them big rich people in New York, Stanford White and Harry Thaw. The first named is in eternity, shot down like a dog and the other is in prison with little hope of ever-being a free man again. I tell you __ __ meens something to be free as a bird. Free from the law, free from condemnation, free fro sin. It means more than we think. It even meens something to be free from restraints of society. The happiness I felt after my rambling around __ the crowded cit at the ___ town, when I got back home and went out into the pire air of the open fields after my old cow in the cool evening shadders of the hill was more than I can tell. Peace, sweet peace came over m sole. No one to molest me. The pure air the birds the heavenly calm was worth all my trip to the crowded city, and I set down on a green mossy bank to rest and sed to myself” this is Homecoming right.” And I jest set there and thought of Joe. Thoughts of love she always sweet and purest when we be take ourselves to solitude. Did you ever notice that. Now some people think I am too old to talk of love but you see they don’t know. But every rose has its thorn and I hav bin very unhappy since the soldiers return. The reason is this: everyday or so somebody has come to me with gate tales on Joe as how the other grate speekers had capture the audience with the eloquences at the Reunion and as how Joe had just slipped around and captured a confederate wider. Well, I saw enuff with my own eyes and there has to be a straigten up of things. Now Mr. Bob H ___? Is a true man and all that but- Goodness alive, my pig has turned over the churn. Excuse me till next letter. ____________ Now, that the Reunion is over, we will have more space for news. See? ________________ W.A.HELM. PRESIDENT J.E.
