"The data which follow are shown in the papers on file in pension claim, S. 2437, based upon service of James Clinton in the Revolutionary War. "James Clinton was born August 11, 1761, in New London Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and moved, when eight years old, with his father to York District, South Carolina. The names of his parents are not shown. "While a resident of York District, South Carolina, James Clinton enlisted in 1780 and served three months as private in Captain Lattimore's company, Colonel Thomas Neel's South Carolina regiment and went on an expedition against the Tories and Creek Indians on the frontiers of Georgia; he enlisted in June 1780, and served as sergeant in Captain Joseph Howe's company, Colonel Andrew Neel's South Carolina regiment. July 1, 1780 he was appointed lieutenant and served in Captain Davis' company, Colonel Bratton's South Carolina regiment; in September 1781, he was commissioned captain; he was in the battles of Mobley's Meeting House, Stallions on Fishing Creek, Hill's Iron Works, Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock, Fishing Creek, Fish Dam Ford, Black Stocks on Tiger River, Monck's Corner, Thompson's Fort, Quarter House and also in engagements at Bratton's Plantation and Biggen's Church. He served one month as a sergeant, and thirteen months as lieutenant; as captain, he served principally on short tours under General Sumter, entire length of that service not shown. "James Clinton was allowed pension on his application executed May 20, 1833, at which time he resided in Caldwell County, Kentucky; he had moved there from York County, South Carolina, about 1803. "There are no data whatever pertaining to the family of this James Clinton. "In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, name and address of person paid, and, possibly, the date of death of this pensioner, you should address the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, this city, and furnish the following data: "James Clinton Certificate #22110 Issued October 11, 1833 Rate $183.33 per annum Commenced March 1, 1831 Act of June 7, 1832 Kentucky Agency.
