John Louis Shelton was born on 23 January 1846 in Murray, Kentucky. His father was
Richard Shelton, and 
his mother was Hannah or Sarah Slaughter. They were married in 1845 in Calloway
County. John had three 
sisters, Mary, Clementine and Clara. Hannah( or Sarah) died in 1853. Richard then
married Mary Dunnoway 
in 1855 and had five more children. John enlisted in the 12th regiment of the
Kentucky Calvary, Callahan 
Division, and then popped up in Tennessee after the war and married Mary Ann Dougan
in September 
1870. They moved back to Kentucky for a period. The 1880 Calloway County census
shows their two boys 
were both born in Kentucky, although their eldest daughter, Lena was born in
Tennessee in 1874. His 
sister, Mary Shelton is living with them, keeping house. The family moves back to
Madison County, 
Tennesee by 1890 for good, and had many more children there.
