Calloway Farmer Makes 13-to-1 Profit on Fertilizer Investment (1928 - 1932 articles) Dark fired tobacco was made to return a profit of $175.00 per acre as a result of an application of fertilizer, according to Charles Walker, farmer at Hazel, Ken- tucky, Calloway county. believing the yield of dark fired tobacco could be increased by applying fertilizer, Mr. Walker worked with Vocational Agricultural in- structor, Frank Melton, at Hazel High School In conducting the demonstration, In order that he and the farmers of the corn- inunity would know the response dark fired tobacco would make to practical applications of fertilizer. The demonstration consisted of three plots. Plot I received no fertilizer and produced a yield of 610 pounds, selling ror $112.80 per acre, or an average of seven- teen cents per pound. Plot II re- ceived 250 pounds 16 per cent siperphosphate, 50 pounds of Murlate of potash, and 20 pounds of Chilean Nitrate of Soda. The yield on this plot was 1,386 pouads per acre, and sold for S $299.76, or an average of twenty two cents per pound. Plot III was fertilized with 250 pounds 16 per cent superphosphate and 50 pounds Murlate of potash, and produced a yield of 960 pounds, selling for $163.80 per acre, or an average of seventeen cents per pound. From an investment of approxi- mately $11.00 worth of ferti- lizer on Plot II, Mr. Walker re- ceived a profit of $175.96. turn of about $16.00 for every dollar invested. These results are very striking. Dark fired tobacco growers who are intersested in making greater profitsshould give serious con- sideration to the question of fertilizer for their tobacco. News articles saved by Prof. Frank Melton My father taught at Hazel from fall 1927 through the 1934 school year, so the articles are all in that time period. I do not know any more than that about exact dates. I'm sure the pictures were taken for the articles at about that time. Frank Melton 4103 23rd Ave .
