NEWSPAPERS: CALLOWAY COUNTY KY - COMMUNITY FAIR HELD AT HAZEL Paducah Sun Democrat, Sat. Oct. 13, 1928 Large Crowd Attends; $100 Awarded Prize-Winning Exhibits Murray, Ky., Oct. 12.--(Special)-- The largest crowd ever known in Hazel was the one that attended the community fair in that town today. The fair was sponsored by the Hazel high school and vicity and was a success in every phase. There were around 2,000 exhibits, including all types of farm products, sixty head of Jersey cattle, sewing, and school displays. Approximately $100 were awarded as prizes. The single judge system was used. Those doing the judging for the different departments were Stanley Pullen, of the Murray Teachers College; Mrs. Mable Glasgow, county health nurse; Mrs. Mitchell, of McKenzie, Tenn.; and Miss Lula Paschall, of Hazel. A large number of tobacco men were there to see the tobacco show. The school parade this morning was one of the spectaculr features of the day when 750 school children from the neighboring schools assembled in school colors and carrying banners marched with the Hazel school through the streets of the town. A prize was awarded White Oak and Smotherman schools for having 100 per cent attendance. The teachers of these schools are Mrs. Lula Gray Wall Grogan and Mrs. Koska Jones. Another event of the day was the baby show in which many babies were entered. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Lettie Sikes Buchanan, Tenn., for the prettiest baby, to Mrs. Rube Alton of Hazel for best all around baby, to Mrs. Jim Hart, of Murray, route 5, for best dressed baby, and to Mrs. Roy Brandon, Hazel, for healthiest baby. Hot lunches were served all day. In the afternoon the crowd listened to an address made by Dr. W. R. Bourne on "Community Spirit". Supt. R. E. Broach was present to view the parade and assist on the attendance committee. Among those present were visitors from Mayfield, Murray, Puryear, Tenn., Paris, Tenn. and Buchanan, Tenn. The officers of the fair were M. O. Wrather, superintendent of the Hazel high school, and general manager; Frank G. Melton, agriculture department, Mrs. M. O. Wrather, Home Makers department, Miss Frances Vaughan and Mrs. W. C. Denham, school department, Miss Elsie Sales, health department, and Mrs. Miss Carnell McRee, art and antiques department. -------------------------------- Judge T. R. Jones, Burnett Waterfield, C. A. Hale and H. T. Waldrop left this afternoon for Louisville to be present at the Al Smith speaking tomorrow night. Mrs. G. B. Scott, district committeewoman, received a telegram this morning from Democrat headquarters at Louisville requesting her presence at a luncheon tomorrow for Governor and Mrs. Alfred E. Smith, and to occupy a place on the platform at the speaking tomorrow night. ==================================================================== News articles saved by Prof. Frank Melton My father taught at Hazel from fall 1927 through the 1934 school year, so the articles are all in that time period.
