Surname: Howard, Livingston, O'Neal, Russell Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Carroll Co. S. L. HOWARD, M. D., was born in Carroll County, Ky., September 12, 1847, and is a son of Samuel and Louisa (Livingston) Howard. Samuel Howard, a native of Bracken County, Ky., was a merchant by occupation, and lived in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Ind., for a few years, and represented Switzerland County, Ind., in the State Legislature. He then moved to Kentucky, where he represented several counties of that State in the Senate. S. L. Howard was educated at Ghent College, and studied medicine at the Miami College, Cincinnati, and also attended the Cincinnati Medical College, after which he went to the Physicians and Surgeons College, at New York City. He graduated in 1873, and began practice at Ghent, Ky., where he now has a large and lucrative practice. In 1872 he married Annie O'Neal, of Carroll County, Ky., daughter of William and Nora (Russell) O'Neal, natives, respectively, of Carroll County, and New York City. Two have blessed this union: Nora and William. Mr. Howard is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and also of the I.O.O.F. He is a Republican in politics, and in religion is a member of the Christian Church.
