In early life he received such education as was afforded in the common schools of his native county, supplemented in a great measure by the practical and useful kind which is acquired through contact with the affairs of life. He remained with his parents, working on the home farm in his native county of Casey, until he attained his majority, at which time he engaged in farming on his own account. This he continued until the year 1877, when he went into the saw-milling business and lumber trade; this he has continued until the present time. He was united in marriage on the 30th of January, 1877, to Miss Maggie Coppage, youngest daughter of Uriah Coppage. To this union is born one son, Walter, born July 10, 1880. Mrs. Swiggett is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Swiggett, though not a member of the church, bases his religious views on justice and fair dealing. His political views are Democratic.
