"Wild Riders" By M. Tarrent
The First Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry was engaged in many battles during the 
Civil War and fought with a determination that soon earned the soldiers the 
nickname "Wild Riders".  At the National Guard Armory in Frankfort, Kentucky 
we found a document referencing the exploits of the First Cavalry.  In the 
document it is reported that the Wild Riders engaged in a great number of 
battles in which loss was sustained.  Among them were the engagements at Wild 
Cat, Mill Springs and Somerset, Kentucky; Lebanon, Philadelphia; Stone River, 
Knoxville and Shiloh, Tennessee; Hillsboro and Lost Mountain, Georgia.
Eli Martin was honorably discharged from the Army at Camp Nelson, Kentucky on 
December 31, 1864.  Eli was wounded either in Tennessee or Georgia, and at the 
time of his discharge he suffered poor eysight and deafness, both service 
connected according to the National Archives Civil War Military Records and 
Pension
