THE WAR ENDS----TODAY A HOLIDAY
     World War II came to an end yesterday ( Tueesday) afternoon when formmal 
announcement was made over the radio by President Truman shortly after six 
o'clock (Central War Time) of the receipt of a message from the Japanese 
government agreeing to the terms of surrender as laid down by the Allied 
Powers following the Potsdam Conference held late in July.  The announcement 
was duly celebrated in this little hamlet where more than 2,500 of the finest 
young men of the world have gone forth to defend Old Glory and the principles 
for which it has stood since the dark days of 1776.  As this is written late 
Tuesday afternoon millions of people will be tuned in on their radios for the 
particulars of the surrender which will be known the world over within a few 
hours.  With the fall of Japan, the world again is at peace,, which came none 
too quick for a turbulent world.  With the announcement of the signing of 
peace, proclamations were issued by President Truman and by Governor Simeon 
Willis designating today ( Wednesday) as a holiday.  Both asked that the day 
be observed with fitting tribute of the end of the most destructive war in the 
history of the world.
