JEFFERSON, born in Christian county, Ky., June 3, 1808. Graduated at West Point 1828. Served on frontier until 1835, when he resigned his commission, and engaged in cotton-planting in Mississippi. Elected to Congress, 1845. Made colonel of a Mississippi regiment, and fought throughout the Mexican war. At close of that war, offered rank of brigadier-general, which he declined. Elected to U.S. Senate in 1847. Resigned seat in Senate, 1851. Appointed Secretary of War by President Pierce. Again chosen Senator, 1858, but retired to join Southern Confederacy. Chosen provisional President of Confederacy, February 22, 1861, and President for six years, 1862. On the fall of Richmond, he escaped southward, but was captured at Irwinsville, Ga., May 10, 1865. Released in summer of 1867. Went to Europe. Returned, and became president of a life insurance company in Memphis. Wrote "Rise and Fall of Confederate Government".
