Robert Presley officiating. Burial will follow in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. He died at about 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2000, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center. Purcell and Sons Funeral Home, Elizabethtown, also is handling arrangements. A native of Christian County, he was born March 1, 1906. He was the son of the late Waverly and Julia Coleman Hawks and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and worked previously for both Cayce-Yost and Hopkinsville Clothing Co. Additionally, after his retirement, he worked as a parking lot attendant downtown. His wife, Emma Johnson Hawks, died in 1968. Survivors include two sons, Waverly Hawks, Elizabethtown, and James Hawks Jr., Keokuk, Iowa; six daughters, Shelby Walker, Los Angeles, Calif., Francis Irving, Chicago, Ill., Samella Lewis, Hopkinsville, Rosa Lee, Nashville, Tenn., Margaret Mitchell, Mount Vernon, Ill., and Julia Livingston, Fayetteville, N.C.; and 27 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
