I John READ senior of the County of Christian and state aforesaid do make this my last will and testament in manner following-I give and bequeath unto my wife Margaret Read my plantation as much land and timber adjoining as is necessary for the use of the plantation, mare named Ball her side saddle and bridle, a bead and furniture a cow and calf, the whole stock of hogs, the plantation utensils house and kitchen furniture, all except such articles or is otherwise appropriated during her life or widowhood, and at my wife's death or marriage, the plantation. I give to my son William Read also the plantation tools, the house and kitchen furniture in like manner to be equaly divided between my two daughters Margaret and Isabella. I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane WOODS (wife of Joseph WOODS) a black horse, a cow and a calf, a bead and furniture, a winsor chair and such other articles all which she has received already to her and her heirs forever. To my grandson John Read WOODS son of Joseph and Jane WOODS little Grays little colt forever. I give and bequeath to my son (Archibald has been partially erased) Alexander Read, one hundred acres of land part of the tract where I now live. Beginning on the southwest corner and running with the west boundary and fifteen poles and fifteen poles to a stake, thence a parallel line with the south boundary line to a point where a two hundred acre lot will reach (which is to include the plantation) thence a line parallel with the east boundary line to a point where turning square will include the above mentioned hundred acres. All the property he has heretofore received to him and his heirs forever only he must give my daughter Margaret Read thirty five dollars in the course of nine months after my decease and if he should fail to pay said thirty five dollars he shall be such hundred acres of land sold as will bring said money. I give and bequeath to my son John Read one hundred acres of land part of the tract where I now live. Beginning at the corner of Alexander Read's lot where it touches a square to stake the east boundary line of the old survey thence parallel with the east boundary line to where it will strike the north boundary line, thence with the old line to where it will strike the most north eastward corner of Alexander Read. Let and all he is indebted to me after a discount is made of what money there is received from him only he must give my daughter Isabella twenty dollars in nine months after my death and if he does not pay the said twenty dollars there shall be as much of the said hundred acres of land sold as will pay said money to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret Read my brown filly, a cow and calf, a bead and furniture, and a sawed (?) backed winsor chair and thirty five dollars to be paid by Alexander Read to her and her heirs forever. I give to my son William Read (one or two?) hundred acres of land the balance of the tract of where I now live it being all of said tract only _ _? to my sons Alexander and John Read except what will I have given to my wife in said land. One cow and calf, Gray's big colt and Ball's yearling colt and windsor chair and all other property as I have given from me to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my daughter Issabella Read, my sorrel filly and cow and calf, also bead and furniture, and a sawed back windsor chair, twenty dollars to be paid by my son John Read and five (?) dollars out of my estate to her and her heirs forever. And it is my further will that all the further residue of my estate not before given or bequeathed all that is perishable shall be sold, a publick sale, and the amount with the monies received or to be _ _? after or my debts is paid out of it shall be equally divided between my wife and three children, the said Margaret, William, and Issabella Read, and lastly I appoint my friend Isham T. Woods, John Cooper, and my son Alexander Read executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seale this fifteenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and fourteen. (The last few words are indecipherable but seem to indicate John Read's burial site. This document is in almost pristine condition but I am unable to make sense of the last few words. This the last will and testament of John Read deceased was produced in court proven by the oaths of John CARR and John ROGERS subscribing witnesses thereto to be the act and deed, hand and seal of the said John Read deceased and ordered to be recorded.
