Where he was born is unknown, but he married for the first time 6 November 1810 in Clark County, to a young girl named Elizabeth Fletcher. After, serving a time in the war of 1812, James came home and they began their family with the birth of a daughter, Mary Ann Chism, who was born between 1817 and 1819. They then had Frances Chism b.16 December 1820, m. Stanley Baber in Clark County on 24 June 1841, and died on 17 February 1908. You can see Frances Chism Baber's tombstone in the Baber Graveyard on ByBee Road in Winchester along side her husband's and several of the other Baber's from this time period. James and Elizabeth's next child we assume was a daughter named Rachel who married Pleasant Baber, Stanley's brother. He (Pleasant) was killed in the Civil War and Rachel then remarried to Thomas Adams. The Chism's then had a son, William Chism, who served in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. He married Frances Fitzpatrick. We don't know when or where. Anyone with information on this couple should please e-mail me. They then had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Ambrose Hall. Then there were two children we have no information about. Then came Lydia Chism, who married John A. Eaton, son of Zachariah Eaton, and Julia AnnChism who married Israel Wilcoxen. William Chism and Frances Fitzpatrick moved their family, except for one son, James William Chism, and one daughter, Emma Jane Chism to Texas in 1872. We believe they settled in the county of Fort Bend, possibly in the city of Rosenburg. We know from there, one daughter, Mary Frances Chism, married a Charles Melvin Rodgers and they had one daughter, Texas, there before moving to Mississippi. Once in MS, they had five other girls,Nebraska, Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri Elizabeth. They also had several sons, William McKinley, Samuel Jefferson, Charles Melvin Jr., James, and Rufus Robert Rodgers. In Clark County today, you can still find many Chisms from this and at least one other family that we haven't tied into yet. By: Jeni Nichols Chism
