P. The Winchester Sun, Thursday January 6, 1927 Ex-Confederate Soldier Is Dead R. P. Scobee, Prominent and Widely Known Man of Winchester and Clark County, Succumbs After Lingering Illness R. R. Scobee, age 80 years, succumbed at his home on Fairfax Street Thursday morning after a lingering Illness from a complication that extended over several months. He was born on June 23, 1847, being the son of Robert and Lucy (Pendleton) Scobee. He has always resided in Clark County, and has been very actively engaged in the various business enterprises of the city, and has dealt extensively in the real estate business. He was the senior member of the R. P. Scobee & Sons Lumber Company of this city. He enlisted in the Confederate army in 1862 under Colonel Clay, but during the war he was wounded at Cynthiana, and was taken prisoner and confined at Camp Douglas, where he remained he remained until after the war. After he was released from prison he was engaged in farming until 1892, when he moved to Winchester and has actively engaged in business since. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and was devoted to his church at all times, never missing a service only when his health would not permit or he was out of the city. He was married to Miss Martha Jane Chorn in March 1868, who succumbed on April 7, 1919. To this union was born five children, four of whom are living: Messrs J. C., R. M., and R. F. Scobee and one daughter; Nancy (Scobee) Bratton, all of this city. He is also survived by J. Will Scobee and R. S. Scobee, brothers, of this city and two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Barnhill of Marshall, Mo., and Mrs. Kate Morris of Mounds, Okla. He was one of Winchester and Clark County’s most enterprising citizens and was for the advancement of the community at all times. He was probably one of the largest real estate owners in Clark County. He also owned property in Florida and at one time developed a large acreage at a hotel in Florida which he was very successful. At one time he owned a hotel in Florida which he later sold at a nice profit. He always took a very active interest in state and county elections. Funeral services will be held at the grave in the Winchester Cemetery on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by Elder Eldon Hutchinson and Dr. J. W. Gillion of this city. The active pall bearers will be J. M. Walker, Wm. Scobee, N. Rol Ratliff, N. W. Sewell, Matt Toohey and Dick McCormick . The honorary pall bearers will be R. P. Taylor, W. D. Strode, W. C. Taylor, J, L. Bosley, W. Z. Haggard, and Levi Goff.
