Buffalo Salt Lick.Daniel’s father, James GARRARD, “laid a 500 acre survey of land” This place was to be the center of his son Daniel’s adult life. Here would be the source of his success as a businessman and the place of his great influence.10 1799 Jul 25 KY Clay Co. Goose Creek 500 acres Commonwealth government patent by James Garrard.9 1801 Jan 1 KY The Corn Stalk Militia of KY. Age 21. Capt of 13th Regiment.6 1807 Jan 15 KY, Goose Creek,Clay Co. Daniel received 1/4 part of 500 Acres with rights to 1/4 of salt water discovered at Buffalo Lick or Ford. Brothers, William and James, Jr. received the other fourths with father, James, owning a 1/4.9 “In consideration of natural love and affection James and Elizabeth Garrard have for William Jr.[sic], James Jr. and Daniel Garrard, and also in consideration of the three having assisted by contribution of money and labor to procure salt water on a tract of land...”10 1807 Dec 12 KY Clay Co. William Jennings. 4,5.7 Daniel Garrard’s company was the first to leave Clay County.5 [company included John and Robert Price and Charles Garrard. It is unknown if these men are family.] 1812 MI War of 1812 Service. Capt of 1st Co. in 2nd Regiment KY Militia. Battle of the Thames near Detroit.2 1812 IN Fort Wayne, nr. Ft. Defiance. with Capt. Bland Ballard, Daniel defeated the British Major Muir’s advance guard.14 1813 KY. Member of the KY Senate. Also in 1817,1825-27, 1829.2 1814 Jan 15 KY Clay Co. Courthouse records Daniel in list of “Minister Bonds” 23 This is interesting in that his father and father –in-law were well known ministers but no word has been found of any religious involvement on Daniel’s part. 1814 Mar 2 KY, Clay Co. Union Salt Works. Birth of son, Edward Pendleton GARRARD.2,22 [NOTE: This child has not been listed in several other sources.] 1815 Dec 1 KY, Clay Co. Union Salt Works. Birth of dau.Maria Pacheco Padilla GARRARD.2 1818 Jan 16 KY, Clay Co. Union Salt Works. Birth of dau. Margaret F. GARRARD.2 1820 KY, Clay Co. owned 30 slaves17 1820 Jan 9 KY, Laurel Co."Modern Paradise". Birth of dau. Mary Jane GARRARD.2 1822 KY, Member of the House of Rep. of KY.2 This was his only term in the lower house. 1822 Mar 17 KY, Clay Co. Goose Creek Salt Works. Birth of son, William Mountjoy GARRARD.2 1823 Dec 11 AL, Mobile Co. Death of Father-in-law, Harry TOULMIN.18 1824 Feb 2 KY Clay Co. Daniel did “absolve, liberate and set free” a slave named Jim.10 1824 ca KY, Clay Co. Sent 2 of his sons and 2 of his daughters to school at Duncan F. Robertson’s, “half way between Francis Clark and old man Bell’s.”17 These children were his sons, Theophilus Toulmin and Edmund Pendleton and daughters, Maria Pacheco Padilla and Margaret. It is possible that all of his children were educated. The family interest in education is clearly established. The 2 brothers, sent to the school mentioned above, were later sent to board at a teacher’s home some distance away. 1824 Nov 2 KY, Clay Co. Marriage of eldest daughter, Eliza Ann, to Gabriel Winters Price.2 1825 KY, State Senator Daniel Garrard of Knox, Harlan, Clay, Perry and Whitley counties .Introduced a bill entitled “An act to establish the county of Laurel.” Apparently the creation of this county was a political hot spot and secrecy surrounded its passage. It was passed and one of its first appointed commissioners was Daniel's son in law, Gabriel W. PRICE who had married Daniel’s oldest child, Eliza Ann, some months previous. 21] 1825 May 3 KY, Clay Co. Union Salt Works.Birth of dau. Catherine Frances GARRARD.2 Unknown KY, Clay Co. Asst. Judge of the County. Atty. for land rights. 10 Book A. p 44,463. 1827 Dec 28 KY Clay Co. Union Salt Works. Birth of dau. Lucinda C.[or F.] GARRARD.2,24 Several sources have confused this Lucinda, Daniel’s daughter, with T.T.’s daughter, Lucinda, b. 1835/36 who is Daniel’s granddaughter. It is thought that the grandaughter was living with her grandfather in 1850 while her father, T.T. was in CA for the gold rush. Those in error include James Welch 1850 Census, and Early Families Eastern KY by William Kozee. 1830 Jan 7 KY, Clay Co. Union Salt Works. Birth of dau. Sophia GARRARD.2 1830 Feb 22 KY, Clay Co. Justice of Peace, County Court.[John Lucas sale] 1831 Mar 28 KY, Clay Co. Adm. of estate of Thomas McRoberts and in Feb. Daniel is listed as Commissioner. Unknown family connection. 1831 Nov 16 KY, Clay Co. Marriage of daughter, Maria Pacheco Padilla to Luther BRAWNER.2 1832 Jan 20 KY Clay Co. Money received from Daniel to settle Jos. Bledsoe estate. Unknown connection. Speculation that this is work as an atty. Or Justice of the Peace. 1832 Mar 8 or 26 KY, Clay Co. Marriage of son, Theophilus Toulmin to Nancy Brawner.2 1832 Dec 13 Death of son Edward Pendleton GARRARD, age 18.2 1833 Mar 19 KY, Clay Co. Birth of dau. Paulina Mountjoy GARRARD.2 1834 Jan 16 KY Marriage of daughter, Margaret to Sidney WILLIAMS.2 1835 Mar 2 KY, Clay Co. Appt. guardian of Lyna and Elizabeth McRoberts. No parents given. Theophilus Garrard also signed bond. It is unknown how this family relates to the Garrards.30 If these are children of Thomas McRoberts, it is unknown who has cared for them in the 5 years since his death. It is thought that guardian means financial responsibility rather than physical care. 1836 Dec 22 KY Clay Co. In 2 transactions, for a total of $1000, received 1050 acres from Zachariah and Jesse Morgan.9 1837 May 2 KY, Scott Co. Georgetown. Marriage of eldest son, James Henry to Letitia J. WINTHERS.2 KY, Clay Co. Mary Todd's will asks Daniel Garrard to see to all her business and "see that my black children are done right with. I want them free. I don't [want my] kinsman to have nothing I am worth." Unknown relationship and how Daniel could effectively follow her wishes. 1842 Feb 22 KY, Clay Co. Marriage of daughter, Mary Jane, to James White.2 1847 Nov 2 KY, Clay Co. Age 69 m.b.VA Farmer $10,000 17 slaves.15 Catherine age 24 Sophia age 20, Palina [sic] age 17, Lucinda age 14. Note: This is his grandaughter, child of T.T. Garrard. NOTE:Handwritten on census "Lucinda J.Toulmin m. 2/21/1808 Mobile AL” [marriage] 1850 Sept 11KY marriage of daughter, Catherine Frances to Michael George Horton. 2 1850 ca KY, Clay Co. “Hired David Yancey Lyttle to prosecute Hays and James Cundiff for the killing of his grandson, Daniel Price.”17 1851 Dec 11 KY, Clay Co. Amendment to will.15 [Possibly cause of Will amendment: death of son James and the western move of son, William. Both were named executors.] Witnesses seem to be grandchildren, Daniel G. Williams and Sarah A. White. Both seem very young for this work. 1853 KY Marriage of daughter, Paulina Mountjoy to Christopher Pitman.2 1855 Oct 16 KY. Knox Co.License for Marriage: Mary F. ADKINS, age 24 of Knox Co. 1855 7 Nov KY, Knox Co. home of James Adkins. Marriage #2. Col. Daniel Garrard age 75 of Clay Co. to Mary F. Adkins age 24 [b. NC]of Knox Co.19,22 They had no children but Mary married William Titus Moren aften Daniel’s death. One of their 3 children she named Theophilus Garrard Moren. 1857 Sept 10KY Marriage of daughter, Sophia, to James Washington Reid.2 1855-1857 KY State Representative2 1860 KY Clay Co. 4th wealthiest man in the county. $32,250 compared to $10,000 in 1850. He also owned 10 slaves in this census.25. 1860 KY US CENSUS CLAY CO. Manchester Dwell. #99225 GARRARD, Daniel 79 b.VA Salt Maker $20,000 $12,250. Mary [nee Adkins] 28 b. NC 1861 KY, Clay Co. Son, Theophilus Toulmin Garrard, made Col. Of 3rd KY Inf.- Later it was named the 7th KY. 16 1862 Sept 6 KY, Clay Co. Manchester. Capture/death of grandson, Robert F. Price, Confederate Guerrilla soldier. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, OH on 10 Oct 1862. and died somewhere during war.26,27,28, 29 It is curious that Daniel, a Confederate sympathizer, didn’t take action to have Robert designated an exchange prisoner or, at least, return the body to KY. Daniel Price’s death and burial have not been determined. 1862 Dec 29 MS, Chickasaw Bluffs. Death of grandson, Capt. Daniel Garrard Union Army, in Civil War Battle of Vicksburg.2, 17 1862 KY Clay Co. Referred to as Sheriff. Received fee Gilbert estate. 1863 May 21 KY Letter from Union Army Maj. Hamilton to Brg. Gen Willcox discuss how "Old Col. Garrard has aided a rebel soldier and how ‘ his house is the regular information depot for the rebel army in this county. The old gentleman is 80 yrs. old [sic]; has one son a Brg Gen. in our army, and another State Treasurer of KY.’ 31 1866 Sep 20 KY Clay Co. Death "at home", possibly in Manchester. Cause: "senile decay." according to grandson, William Reid. 32 1866 KY, Clay Co. Manchester. Burial in Garrard Cemetery.1 1866 Oct 4 KY, Clay Co. Will executed and recorded by W. L. White, Clerk.15 It is thought that this clerk is William Letcher White, husband of Daniel’s grandaughter, Martha E. Price. 1898 KY, Clay Co. Rev. John Jay Dickey’s assessment of Daniel: “Daniel Garrard was a skeptic, though a moral man and a good citizen.” His assessment of Gov. James Garrard, father of Daniel: “ Governor Garrard was a Baptist preacher but became tinged with Unitarianism,perhaps through Mr. T. [Harry Toulmin] his Secretary of State whose daughter was Gen. T.T.’s mother.
