(1st document) State of Kentucky, County of Owsley. On the 2nd day of May, A.D. one thousand nine hundred and 07 personally appeared before me, a deputy clerk within and for the county and state aforesaid John Gilbert who, being duly sworne according to law, declares that he is 71 years of age, and a resident of Doorway county of Owsley state of Kentucky; and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Irwin Kentucky under the name of John Gilbert on the tenth day of October 1862 as a private in Co. I 14th Regement Vol. Cav. in the service of the United States, in the Civil War, and was Honorably Discharged at Camp Nelson Ky. on the 24th day of March, 1864. That he was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States otherwise then above. That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height 5 feet 10 inches, Complexion, fair, color of eyes blue, color of hair black, that his occupation was farmer, and he was born July 5th 1835 at Madison County, Kentucky. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Perry and Owsley County, Kentucky. That he is a pensioner. That he has heretofore applied for pension his certificate number is 496150. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provision of the act of February 6, 1907. That his post office address is Doorway, county of Owsley, state of Kentucky. He died December 20, 1920 in Owsley County Kentucky at his daughter's home. He was also buried on her farm. she was Laura Gilbert Baker w/o Robert H. Baker.
