Deweese, a pioneer citizen of Lamar county, died Saturday morning at his home on Lamar avenue. Mr. Deweese, who was 86 years old, was born in Clinton county, Kentucky in 1841. He came with his family to Texas in 1857 and settled south of Paris near Biardstown. Since that time he has resided in Lamar county continuously, having moved from the Biardstown community to Paris about twenty years ago. He served in the Confederate army throughout the Civil War, being a member of the Ninth Texas Cavalry, Company H. After his discharge from the army in 1865 he was married to Miss Paralee Poteet, who died in 1934 [should be 1923]. Mr. Deweese is survived by two brothers, Louis W. Deweese of Paris and Thomas J. Deweese of Shamrock, Texas. He is also survived by two sons and two daughters, J. T. Deweese of Hugo, O. J. Deweese of Glory, Mrs. Oscar Price of Biardstown and Miss Susan Deweese, with whom he had been living. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock this morning at the Evergreen Cemetery and will be conducted by Tom L. Beauchamp. Pallbearers will be Ennis Deweese, Reginald Deweese, Gilbert Deweese and Morris Deweese, all grandsons of the deceased.' *Tombstone is inscribed, 'Joe W. Deweese 1841-1927.' Lamar County Marriage Record Book 4, p. 17: Joseph Dewese [sic] married Paralee Poteet. *Joe Wright Deweese received a pension from the State of Texas for service in the Confederate Army #34071. *Information from Donna Stallings Streun, 23 Apr 1997, 1305 East County Rd. 128, Midland, TX 79706: Joe Wright Deweese joined the 9th Texas Cavalry Co. H in Lamar County. He was surrendered at Jackson, Miss. in May 1865. *THE PARIS WEEKLY NEWS, Thursday, Sept. 13, 1923: He appears on the current roster of members of the Albert Sidney Johnston Camp, United Confederate Veterans, listed as having served in Co. H, 9th Texas Cavalry. *Joseph W. Deweese, Pvt., Co. H, 9th Texas Cavalry, is listed in TEXAS CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS 1861 - 1865 UNIT ROSTER, Vol. II, edited by Janet B.
