Minutes for 1823 Jan - Samuel HOPKINS Jr admitted that at a recent corn shucking he became angry and struck a man, said he shouldn't have done it, was upset with himself. Church to bear with him. John T WOODS received back into membership after asking for forgiveness for whipping slave Gilbert. A difficulty still exists between Joshua STOREY and his wife and Sister BRATCHER. Jessie SMITH, Homer WOOD, Homer COLT, Carter DALTON & James WEBB to visit them and endeavor to help solve the situation.. Feb - The STOREY and BRATCHER case reported satisfaction in the situation. Polly ADKINS granted a letter of dismission. Mar - Difficult between James MABERY who is a member of Wolf Creek Church and James WEBB of this church. Isaac DENTON, Wm GRIMSLEY, Jessie SMITH, Carter DALTON & Wm WOOD to meet the parties at Jessie HULL's house. Report agaisnt Benjamin CAMPBELL and Philip SMITH to talk to him. Apr - WEBB & MABRY case settled. Wm DEWESSEE admitted that he had been in an affray, church to bear with him. Report that there is still trouble between the STOREY's and Sister BRATCHER - another committee appt of John McCLELLAND, Calvin SMITH to cite Bratcher to attend the June meeting. Moses HULL, Betsey HULL, Polley HULL, Betsy HULL Jr and Dolly HULL granted letters of dismission; Washington HOPKINS received by letter. May - Wm SEWELL received by letter and on the next day James PARKER. Jun - Benjamin CAMPBELL restored to fellowship. Sister BRATCHER - excluded because of a report charging Sister STOREY receiving a report from Jacob MARTER acting disorderly. Other parties to be cited to the next sesssion. Jul - Bro Jacob's case taken up - he a slave, was excluded for not obeying his master and improper conduct. James SMITH's case taken up - he to do better and church to wait on him. Church to discuss a new constitution. Carter DALTON, Nicholas DUNNIGAN, Rebeckah DUNNIGAN, Joshua STORY, James WEBB, Tilmond MURLEY, Wm HARRIS, John McCLELLAND, Mary MURLEY, Sarah HARRIS, Catherine STORY and Margaret BAKEMAN wishing to constitute a new church. Aug - Thomas WOOD, Philip SMITH and John C SMITH to visit Isaac CROUCH, a member of Wolf Creek Church to let him know that this church is not satisfied with his having made charges against Clear Fork church. Nellie DAVIDSON dismissed to join the new constitution. Sep - Visit to see CROUCH satisfactory. Letter of dismission granted Abagail SCOTT, also to James SMITH and wife Peggy. Slaves Charles and Joe to visit slave Philip and cite him to the next meeting. Joe also allowed to exercise his gift in this and neighboring churches. (Note - first mention of a slave being able to sing, lead music or do something special in a church!) Oct -Philip SMITHS case continued. Wm CROSSE and Joseph PERKINS to ask Samuel SCOTT to attend the next meeting. Rebeckah STOCKTON granted letter of dismission. Nov - Philip excluded for lying and other charges.
