ESTATE SALE: STATON, Rane, 1842, Cumberland County, KY *********************************************************************** Submitted by William Staton *********************************************************************** NOTES: The fractions of a penny are shown as decimals, but they were recorded as 1/4 and 1/2 of a cent, but, of course, my keyboard no longer has fractions on the keyboard like a typewriter. John Rane's daughter, Nancy Snell Staton Philpot Sewell was secretary for the sale, and I have a handwrittenn copy in which probably was hers. I intend to copy the hand writing of the sale with the conty clerk's writing. I left mathematical and grammatical errors as they were written. If you grew up in Cumberland County, reading the buyers' names will seem like old home week. They prices have inflated since that era takes my breath. Imagine all the live stock and homefurnishings beingsole for a few dollars and cents, and the total sale receipts were less than one good beef cow now. Notice that each day of the sale is stated twice, which may indicate that that the date is correct. Elsewhere the date for John Rane's death is given as 1843, but it is clear that he died in either 1842 or 1843. _________________________________________________________________________ RANE STATON dec'd "Sale" A list of Sales of the Estate of Rane Staton dec'd Sold on the 26th and 27th days of August 1842 By an order of the Cumberland County Court appointing Jubilee Goggin Curator to Said Estate - Alex'r Murphy 1 grind stone $ 1.00 Alex'r :Murphy 1 log chain 3.00 Joseph P Sewell 1 hand axe & clevis 0.50 James Staton 2 honey covers 0.375 James Staton 1 Durham & Palton Bull 11.00 Lindsey Ellis 1 Palton Cow & Calf 13.00 Amount forwarded $ 28.875 Amount forwarded $ 28.371 Joseph P Sewell 1 half blooded Bull calf 5.00 Joseph P Sewell 1 full blooded Bull calf 7.00 James Staton 1 white back cow & calf 4.25 James Staton 1 Red Brindle Steer 3.25 Hiram A Staton 1 Red Brindle 3 yr old heifer 5.00 Elam F Boles 1 white & red mulak cow 5.56 James Staton 1 Red Brindle heifer 4.37 Hiram Staton 1 Red & White heifer 3.25 Albert G Waggoner 1 Red & white mulak heifer 3.93 E F Boles 1 white & brindle cow 5.00 Joseph S Bledsoe 1 red heifer 4.80 Alfred King 2 oxen and yoke 33.50 Joseph S Bledsoe 1 Pided Steer 4.75 Andrew Stoner 1 black steer 7.00 John Scott,Sr. 1 white back cow 5.18 Joseph S Bledsoe 1 red and white steer 5.30 Andrew T Stoner 1 large red steer 10.25 Joseph P Sewell 1 old jenney 18.00 Joseph P Sewell 1 young ,lenney 29.50 Wm.
