Most of what we know about them comes from census records, the death records of their twelve known children, from other family histories and, more recently, from DNA testing which proves conclusively that Dora is the grandson of James Haden Moorman and his second wife, Nancy Ann Owen, most probably through their son, Silas Mercer Moorman. Dora was born and raised on the Moorman family farm located in the Planters Hall area of Breckinridge County, Kentucky, about seven miles due south and a little west of Hardinsburg. Some time before 1870, Dora and Della Higgs moved to Daviess County and purchased 274 acres in the southwest section of Murray's Precinct. Dora sold or transferred portions of this property to his sons before his death, including: 3 acres to Henry E Moorman for $1; 63 3/4 acres to Thomas Moorman "for love and affection", and 63 3/4 acres to Luke A Moorman "for love and affection". Dora died in August of 1894 and is buried in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Utica.
