He volunteered in 1778 in Rowan County, North Carolina, under Captain William Wilson, Lieutenant John Todd, Ensign Alexander Dobbins, Colonel Francis Locke and Brigadier General Rutherford. During 1780 and 1781 he served seven tours of duty as a minute man against the Tories. He was born in York County, Pennsylvania, in 1760. He moved to Rowan County, N. C.
