"Brains Blown Out. John Meredith, the eighteen year old son of Stroude Meredith, of Bee Springs, Edmonson county, was instantly killed Monday under the most distressing circumstances. Meredith and two young neighbor boys went squirrel hunting and the gun of one of the boys was accidentally discharged. The full load took effect in Meredith's head, blowing his brains out. The unfortunate young man died instantly." Source: Glasgow (KY) Times, 5 May 1898 issue.
