RT. 504 MAUK RIDGE Location: Elliott County, Ky. Rt. 504. Rt. 1623 from Limestone in Carter County joins 504. From that intersection south about one tenth of a mile is a gravel road to the left. Just off this are a barn and an old house foundation. Walk past the barn to the cemetery. It is bounded by an old wove wire fence and has a gate on the left side. There is a farm gate to get on this property. It should be left closed. The property currently belongs to Richard Smith of Ky. 504 in Elliott County. There are many sunken places without stones and/or visible rocks and many rocks marking now unremembered graves. There are two burials currently without markers on the far right side away from the gate. These are the most recent burials and I believe the only newer ones in several decades. Indeed they date from the seventies and are of two brothers, Clayton and John Mauk. They are related to the older Mauk's but I am unsure of just how. We think that there father was a Fred Mauk and that there mother was a Garris. We do not know who gave permission for burial there. There is no direct descendant that we know of although they had a sister who had arranged this burial. A.J. Mauk - Inscription: FATHER .J. SON MAUK JULY 6, 1862 DIED AUG.5, 1938 (Marker is made of poured cement and is lying down flat. Rectangle, curved top. Inscription worn but clear.)(Interview with Langley Roosevelt Mauk in 1997 of Elliott Co reveals that A.J. was Andrew Jackson Mauk. He remembers him and he was a cousin, not in Langley Roosevelt's direct line.) Lula Mauk - Inscription: MOTHER LULA MAUK BORN APRIL 18, 1833 DIED MARCH 14,1956 (Marker is made of poured cement and is lying down flat. Rectangle, curved top. Inscription is worn but clear. This one and A.J. Mauk's stone appear to be mates. They both lie nearest the gate.) Margaret Mauk - Inscription: MARGARET MAUK OCTOBER 15, 1860 JULY 9, 1987 GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN (Stone lying down with top Propped on the base. Margaret was F.M. Mauk's oldest daughter. She Married a Joe Slusher from the same area and bore one child, Mary Slusher. They were only married a short time.) Sarah P. Sparks - Inscription: SARAH P. SPARKS BORN APRIL - 1805 DIED MAY 23, 1900 (The date in April is not clear and it could be an 8. The Inscription is worn but legible except for this. Her stone is the farthest one in the First row from the gate. Sarah P. was probably Sarah's mother and F.M.'s Mother in law. Family lore has it that Margaret Mauk's mother was a Sparks. This would make her maternal grandmother a Sparks by marriage. Sarah P. is listed as widowed mother in household of F.M. and Sarah Mauk. Peter Mauk - Inscription: PETER MAUK BORN APRIL - 1817 DIED FEB - 1885 Sarah Mauk - Inscription: SARAH MAUK BORN SEPTEMBER 1839 DIED NOV 6, 1876 (Inscription worn but legible. Stone is a rectangle. It has a small oval on top. An engraving of an open book over the name. Sarah was the first wife of F.M. Mauk and bore him many children. Among these were Margaret, Peter and A.J. These are buried in this cemetery. This is from family lore and also from census records of 1850,1870,1880. In these records F.M's wife was Sarah. In the 1880 census his wife is Armelia. Sarah Mauk died in 1876 and in the 1880 census a child a child was listed as Born in 1876. An inference can be made that she died during or after childbirth.) F.M. Mauk - Inscription: F.M. MAUK BORN MAR.26, 1827 DIED FEB.4, 1901 (Inscription clear. Monument a plinth in the back left corner of the cemetery. Also listed is Armelia. According to family lore and in Interview in 1997 with Langly Roosevelt Mauk, F.M.'s name was Fred or Frederick. Armelia Mauk - Inscription: ARMELIA HIS WIFE, BORN NOV. 30, 1840 (Inscription Clear. No death date. This is on the plinth with F.M. Mauk. In census of 1880 Armelia is listed as wife in F.M's household with a young baby, Frederick. Her birthplace is listed as Va.) There are several illegible stones along the back row of the fence.
