the late Lewis E. and Mary Bays Ferguson, died Nov 12, 1997 in Morehead, Rowan Co, KY.  
Preceded: husband, James Cecil Phillips Sr., sons, Herbert Phillips and Hobert Phillips, 2 gc.  
Survived: son, James Cecil Phillips Jr., daus, Charolene Phillips, Carol Jean Lewis and Mary 
Karen Skaggs, brother, Curt Ferguson, sister, Faye Whitley, 12 gc, 20 g-gc, 3 g-g-gc.  Burial: 
Nov 15, 1997 in the Phillips family cemetery.  

Herbert J. “Jack” Carpenter, 65, of Warren, OH, formerly of Olive Hill, Carter Co, KY, born Oct 
9, 1932 in Carter Co, KY, son of the late Morgan and Marie E. Callihan Carpenter, died Nov 14, 
1997 at his home.  Survived: son, Mark J. Carpenter, daus, Debra L. Sachs and Cindy L. 
Gilmore, brothers, Hobert “Bert” C. Carpenter, Herman D. Carpenter, Bennie. Carpenter and 
Emmett E. Carpenter, sister, Louella Tingler, 6 gc, 1 g-gc.  Burial: Nov 17, 1997 in the Kerr 
Cemetery, Mineral ridge, OH.  

Annie Caudill Withrow, 82, of Haldeman, Rowan Co, KY, born Feb 10, 1915 in Elliott Co, KY, 
dau of the late Sam and Nerve Cox Caudill, died Nov 10, 1997 at Morehead, Rowan Co, KY.  
Preceded: husband, Clarence “Ted” Withrow in 1979, dau, Jewell Withrow.  Survived: sons, 
Jack Withrow and Ivan Withrow, daus, Oveda Messer and Clotine Fraley, 3 gc.  Burial: Nov 13, 
1997 in the Brown Cemetery, Rowan Co, KY.

Elijah Vaughn Triplett, 67, of CA, formerly of Hitchins, Carter Co, KY, born Feb 22, 1930 in 
Carter Co, KY, son of the late Charles and Carrie Houck Triplett, died Nov 11, 1997 in 
Oklahoma, OK.  Preceded: wife, Peggy Irons Triplett.  Survived: sons, Mark Triplett and Mike 
Triplett, dau, Dr.Janice Triplett, sisters, Eloise Crawford, Bernetta Tolar, Muriel Keyser, Helen 
Calhoun and Betty Wellman, brother, Wilmer “Bill” Triplett, 2 gc.  Funeral services conducted 
Nov 16, 1997, burial at a later date in Camarello, CA.

Jack Thornbury, 79, of Rush, KY, born May 4, 1918 in Lawrence Co, KY, died Nov 14, 1997 at 
his home.  Preceded: wife, Bessie Alene Thornsbury in 1989.  Survived: son, Don Thornsbury, 
daus, Diana Berry, Linda Withrow and Patty Cooksey, step-brother, Walden Savage, 9 gc, 4 g-
gc.  Burial: Nov 17, 1997 at Cribs Hill Cemetery.

Irene Kidd Lewis, 55, of Clearfield, Rowan Co, KY, born Dec 22, 1941 in Morgan Co, dau of 
Berry and Lillian Black Kidd, died Nov 11, 1997 in Morehead, Rowan Co, KY. Survived:  
husband, Herbert Ray Lewis, sons, Allen Glenn Lewis and Herbert Dwayne Lewis, dau, Patty 
Ann Lewis, brothers, Troy Kidd and Berry Kidd Jr, sisters, Avonell Gibson, Eula Gray and Ivory 
Wright, 1 grandson.  Burial: Nov 15, 1997 in the Ditney Cemetery.

Samuel R. Wilcox, 84, of Hitchins, Carter Co, KY, born Oct 3, 1913 in Deer Creek, son of the 
William and Anna Harris Wilcox, died Nov 11, 1997 in Ashland, Boyd Co, KY.  Precededd: 
wife, Elsie Keyes Wilcox in 1977, son, William C. Wilcox earlier this year (1997).  Survived: 
dau, Alberta Lambert, sons, Samuel Wilcox Jr., Walter Wilcox and David Wilcox, brothers, Alan 
Wilcox and Paul Wilcox, 12 gc, 16 g-gc.  Burial: Nov 14, 1997 in the East Carter County 
Memory Gardens, Grayson, Carter Co, KY.

Virginia H. Williams, 77, of Morehead, Rowan Co, KY, born Jan 1, 1920 in Rowan Co, KY, dau 
of the late Burns and Virginia Lee Crawford Johnson, died Nov 13, 1997 in Rowan Co, KY.  
Preceded: husband, James H. Williams in 1962.  Survived: daus, Jalah clinger and mary jane

Lillian Foster McKenzie, 78, formerly of Russell, KY, born Sept 19, 1919 in Morehead, Rowan 
Co, KY, dau of the late John and Martha J. Caudill Foster, died Nov 14, 1997 in Woodland 
Oaks, Ashland, Boyd Co, KY.  Preceded: husband, William E. McKenzie in 1944. Survived: 
sons, Ray McKenzie and Jerry Lee McKenzie, sister, Eula Mae West, 4 gc, 4 g-gc.  Burial: Nov 
17, 1997 in the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens, Flatwoods, KY.

Lillian Hazel Hitch Whitt, 72, of Clearfield, Rowan Co, KY, born May 3, 1925 in Morgan Co, 
KY, dau of the late John and Rosie Jennings Hitch, died Nov 11, 1997 at her home.  Preceded: 
husband, Bernard M. Whitt in 1988.  Survived: sister, Mary Hitch, several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Park, Carter Co, KY.

Phillip Holbrook, 35, of Olive Hill, Carter Co, KY, born Aug 2, 1962 in Grayson, Carter Co, 
KY, son of Clabe and Margie Bear Holbrook, died Nov 11, 1997 at his home.  Survived: 
brothers, Johnnie Holbrook and Kirk Holbrook, sister, Evelyn Stamper.  Burial: Nov 14, 1997 at 
the Holbrook Cemetery.

Emmett Akers, 70, of Louisa, Lawrence Co, KY, born Feb 26, 1927 in Floyd Co, KY, son of the 
late Ardath Hill Akers, died Nov 9, 1997 in Louisa, Lawrence Co, KY.  Survived: sons, Jed 
Akers, Stephen Akers and Charles Akers, daus, Jessie Akers and Ardath Akers, 5 half sisters and 
1 half brother.  Funeral services: Nov 12, 1997, no burial info.

Morgan Ray Cline, infant dau of Kent Ray and Christy Starlene Sammons Cline, born Oct 26, 
1997 in Ashland, Boyd Co, KY, died Nov 14, 1997 in Louisville, Jefferson Co, KY.  Survived:  
maternal grandmother, Sandra Isaacs Sammons, paternal grandparents, Raymond and Myrtie 
Jordan Cline.  Burial: Nov 16, 1997 in the Cline Cemetery, Olive Hill, Carter Co, KY.
