Elliott County=s Union Civil War Veterans in 1890 By John A. Stegall < johnstegall@hotmail.com One installment in a series of articles Mr. John A. Stegall prepares and publishes in The Elliott County News, this article being a continuation from Oct 31, 1997 and first appearing in the Dec 12, 1997 edition of said paper. Transcribed with permission from the author by Samone Ratcliff on Dec 3, 1999. John J. Rose: Pvt., Co., B, 14th., Ky., Inf. This veteran indicated in 1890 that he entered the Union Army on Oct 10, 1861 and was discharged on Jan 31, 1865. He did not name a specific post office as his address, but the census-taker had written in ABackbone of Elliott County@. Since John J. Rose was found living in the Little Fork area in 1890, I assume that he is the John Rose named in the 1860 Lawrence Co, KY census. At that time he stated that he was 27 years of age and was bor in KY. His wife, Mary E., was 29, and indicated taht she was born in Va. They had three children: Margaret A., age 7 years; Thomas B., 4; and Wesley, 2. Living next door to John in 1890 was a James Rose, age 52, and who I suspect to have been John=s Father. I do not find the John J. Rose family enumerated in the 1870 Elliott Co census; neither do I find any mention of him in the birth records for Elliott Co. When the 1880 Elliott Co census was taken, John Rose was a resident of the Little Fork Precinct. He was 53 years of age; Mary E. was 51. Neither age is consistent with those given in the 1860 census. Their children named in the 1880 report were: Wesley, 20; James, 13; Nancy, 10; and Robert, 3. It would seem apparent there were other children born between Nancy and Robert and were probably deceased. Elliott Co tax records 1890 show John Rose still residing in the Little Fork Precinct, and the owner of 40 acres of land. His nearest neighbor was Al Murphy, who was referred to as Allen Murphy in another record. In the tax records, Allen=s nearest neighbor was J. P. Rose. In 1900, John J. Rose was still living in the Little Fork area. He indicated that he was 66 years of age, having been born in Jan 1834. (This age closely corresponds with his age as given in 1860.) In this census, John=s wife was called Bettie, age 65, and stated that she was bor in Jan 1835. They stated that they had been married 48 years, therefore, Bettie must have been the Mary E. named in other census reports. John J. and Bettie Rose indicated in 1900 that they had 6 children, 1 of them being deceased. John Rose, age 32, and apparently the son of John and Mary E., was living near the elder Roses in 1900. He indicated that he had been married 6 years and named 2 children: Nora, 5; and John, 2. I do not find John J. and Mary E. Rose named in the 1910 Elliott Co census. Perhaps they were deceased by then, but I have seen no dates of death for them, neither do I know the exact place of burial for them. Only one Rose family was found living in the Little Fork Precinct, that being Crockett Rose. He and Mandy had one child, Gladys, age 5 years. I believe Gladys married Matthew M. Boothe. (Correct me Carol if I am in error on this.) Robert L. Rose: Pvt., Co., 5th., Ky., Inf. He indicated that he was in the Confederate Army from Nov 1861 to Nov of 1862. His post office was Ibex. Rose family researchers say Robert Letcher Rose was born Sept 19, 1843 in Carter Co, KY, a son of Robert, Sr. and Sarah Perry Rose (mentioned in an earlier article). This same source says that he was in the United Baptist Church and was known as APreacher Bob@ Rose. It is recorded in the Carter Co records that Robert L. Rose and Sarah B. King were married Mar 25, 1865; however, family records indicate that the correct date was Mar 23. Witnesses to the marrige were R.P. Whitt and E. Whitt, with the marriage rites spoken by J. Mauk. The first mention of Robert Rose is in the 1850 Carter Co census, which indicates that he was 6 years of age. When the Elliott Co census was taken in 1870, Robert L., and Sarah Rose had established their home in the Martinsburg Precinct. Robert was 26 years of age; Sarah was 27, and indicated that she had been born in Va. Their children were: Sarah, age 4 years; Jane, 2; and Amanda, 4 months. Amanda Rose, age 30, and most likely a sister of Robert L., was living in the Rose home. Robert L. Rose was a resident of the Moccasin Precinct when the 1880 census was taken. He was 36 years of age; Sarah was 37. Six children were named in this report: Sarah E., 14; Rosina J., 12; Amanda L., 10; Samuel, 5: Henry F., 2; and Sabra E., 1 month. The 1890 Elliott Co tax records indicate that Robert L. Rose owned 50 acres of land in the Moccasin Precinct, and that his nearest neighbor was James Nickells. In 1900, Robert L. Rose indicated that both he and Sarah were 56 years of age. They had been married 35 years and had 11 children, 2 of them being deceased. Children named in the 1900 census were: Francis, 22 (born in Aug 1878); Sabra E., 20 (Mar 1880); John P., 18 (Oct 1882); Jesse, 16 (Sept 1883); and James 13 (July 1886). The older children were married by 1900 and had established their own homes; Sarah had married William Holbrook; Rozina had married Reuben Curnutte; Amanda was married to John Curnutte; Samuel had married Leota Mullins. Sarah King Rose died on Feb 10, 1910, and was, therefore, not named in the 1910 census. Robert L., however, was found living in the home of his son, Jesse. He indicated that he was 67 years of age. Robert L. Rose remained a widow until May 3, 1914 when he married Louise Knipp Boggs. Robert L. Rose was apparently a very prominent citizen of Elliott Co. On Aug 23, 1886, the voters of Elliott Co chose him to be their County Judge. Again, he was chosen to be Judge on Jan 7, 1894. He was elected for a third term on Jan 3, 1902. APreacher Bob@ Rose died Jan 29, 1917, after a long life of service to the citizens of Elliott Co. I would like to mention that Robert L. Rose=s daughter, Sabra, became the wife of Dr. Wales S. Brown, a physician known far and near as one of the best in KY. They were buried in the Brown Cemetery on Brown Ridge. William E. Rose: Two entries were made for this veteran. One entry indicates the following: AConf. Soldier, Pvt., Co. E 5th., Ky., Inf., Fall 1861 to Fall 1863 (2 years, 3 months). Disbanded, not discharged.@ In the other entry, he is a: Pvt., Co., E, 40th., Ky., Mtd., Inf. Fall 1863 to Dec 30, 1864 (1 year). Sol. U.S. Wounded in left arm and hip. His post office was Gimlet. If this information is correct, William E. Rose apparently went with the Confederacy for more than 2 years, then switched his loyalty to the Union. Perhaps some of his descendants have an explanation. William E. Rose indicated that he joined the union Army in the Fall of 1863, and this seems very possible. The 40th Regiment was recruited and mustered in at Grayson, Carter Co, in Sept of 1863, for 12 months of service. Just as Rose indicated, this Regiment was mustered out on Dec 30, 1864. Guerrilla activity was rampant throughout Kentucky when the 40th Regiment was recruited, and it was immediately ordered into active service with very little training. Being a mounted (horseback) Infantry, it was often called upon to defend different parts of our eastern area of Kentucky, and it is reported that they did so in remarkable fashion. Rose family researchers say William E., was the son of Robert Rose, Sr., and Sarah Perry Rose, and, therefore, a grandson of Jacob Rose of Burke Co, NC. Like his brothers, Jesse and Robert , Jr., William Rose is first mentioned in the 1850 Carter Co, KY census. At that time, he was 4 years of age. It is recorded in the marriage records of Carter Co that William E. Rose and Ellen Leedy were married Mar 5, 1868, by Alfred Catron. Witnesses to the marriage were John Walters and Julia Harris. By the time the 1870 Elliott Co census was taken, William and Mary Ellen Leedy Rose had established their own home in the Mauk Ridge area of Elliott Co. William was 24 years of age, Mary Ellen was 21. They had one child, Sarah, age 1 year. When the census was taken in 1880, it was indicated that William E. and Mary Ellen were residents of the Moccasin Precinct. William E. was 34 years old; Mary Ellen was 31, and indicated that she was born in VA (Wythe Co). Six children were named in the 1880 census: Sarah F., 11; Mary A., 9; Ida J., 8: Amanda L., 4; Robert N., 3: and Charles, 2 months (born in May). Elliott Co tax records show a William E. Rose a resident of the Moccasin Precinct, and the owner of 300 acres of land. He indicated that he had 5 children between the ages 6 and 20 years in his household. It appears that William E. Rose died in the 1890's. When the census was taken in 1900, Mary Rose indicated that she was a widow, age 51 years (born Feb 1849 in VA). A daughter, Ida Cox, age 26 years, was in Mary=s home when the census-taker came by. Ida was married to Abijah P. Cox. Mary Ellen Leedy Rose was living in the home of her son, Charles, when the 1910 census was taken. She indicated that she was 61 years of age, a widow, and the mother of 7 children, 1 of them being deceased. According to cemetery information, William and Mary Rose are buried in their family cemetery near the home of Plummer Rose on Rt. 1555. Information taken from their grave markers show that William E., was born Aug 14, 1845 and died Aug 22, 1896. Mary was born Feb 26, 1849 and died May 16, 1917. The one child that William and Mary had indicated as deceased was most likely Willie, who is also buried in this cemetery. He was born Aug 9, 1883 and died Nov 12, 1893.
