Vol. Military records indicate that this veteran entered the Confederate Army in Carter Co on Dec 13, 1861. Co. D, was mustered in on Oct 19, 1861, for a term of one year, therefore, we may assume that Montgomery Crockett left the army on Oct 20, 1862. The first record I find for Montgomery Crockett is the 1870 Elliot Co census report. At that time, he indicated that he was 33 years of age and had been born in VA. Researchers say Montgomery "Gum" was indeed born in Wythe Co, VA on May 10, 1839. Obviously, if the date of birth is correct, his age as given in 1870 is incorrect. Family records also indicate that Montgomery Crockett was a son of John Montgomery Crockett and Mary Nickells. Although mary was married a number of times, there seems to be no record for her marriage to John Crockett. (Perhaps I could point out that Mary Nickells' last husband was Granville Bumgardner, a brother to the John Bumgardner who was killed during the Civil War, and about whom I have already written. Also Stewart Bumgardner, a son of Granville, was killed on Christy Creek during he feud in Rowan Co.) It is interesting to note that while Mary Nickells Bumgardner came to KY, John Montgomery Crockett went west to Texas where he apparently lived out his life in Lamar Co, and is buried in the Old Shamrock Cemetery near Clarksville, TX. (I have a photo of Col. John Montgomery Crockett's grave marker.) Back to the 1870 census: Montgomery Crockett's wife is listed as Mary, age 35, and born in VA. Again, family records indicate that "Gum" and Mary Jane Carter were married Jan 5, 1865 in Carter Co, KY and undoubtedly that area that later became part of Elliott Co. It should be noted that a Morgan Co, KY marriage record shows that a John M. Crockett and Mary Stafford were married in that county, Mar 30, 1858. I cannot verify that this was the veteran Montgomery Crockett. Mary Jane Carter Crockett was a daughter of George W. and Cynthia Conn Carter, also VA natives who settled in present-day Elliott Co. Those who have access to my articles on the Carter Family will find her mentioned therein. In 1870, Montgomery and Jane Crockett had the following children: George, age 5; John, 4; and Robert, 2. When the 1880 Elliott Co, KY census was taken, this Crockett family was enumerated in Precinct #1, Martinsburg; however, their residence was far up Brown Ridge and very near the Rowan Co line. At that time, Montgomery gave his age as 41, which corresponds with the date of birth previously mentioned. Mary J. was 44, which is consistent with the age given in 1870. Six children were named: George, 14; Newton, 13; Robert E. Lee, 11; Martha J., 9; Albert M., 6; and Mandy, 3. A note of reference to the Elliott County Mortality Schedule indicates that another daughter, Virginia, had been born in Oct, but died at the age of 4 months of bronchitis. Elliott tax record for 1890 indicate that a John M. Crockett was a resident of Precinct #1, Martinsburg, but the record seems to be incomplete in that it does not list a nearest neighbor, amount of property, and total value of the property. Neither does it indicate that there were children between the ages of 6 and 20 years in the household. Also in the Crockett household in 1900, were Albert Crockett, a son, 36 years of age (born Apr 1864); Albert's wife, Sarah J. Eldridge Crockett, 24 (born Apr 1876); and 2 children of Albert and Sarah: Zora, a son, 4 years of age; and Henry, 7 months. Montgomery Crockett died May 7, 1903, undoubtedly at his residence near Caney Creek, and is buried in the Barnett-Binion Cemetery nearby. Mary Jane Carter Crockett died Sept 4, 1927 and is buried in the same cemetery. Finished
