Estill County Road Surveys ------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed to the Estill Co., KY Archives by: Ed Puckett Published in the ECHGS newsletter & used here with their permission Date: 06/01/1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------- 21 Feb 1825 - Review for a road from Irvine to the Clay County line, where said line corsses the Duck Fork of Sturgeon. We met at the house of Henry Lutes on 14 Jan 1824. First sworn before James McGuire, Justice of the Peace. To turn off from the present Irvine road at what is called Gess's Point, thence following the divide to the Sinks of the Old Landing Hill, thence going up at or near what is called Winding Stairs, thence following the dividing ridge to the mouth of Contrary Creek and corssing the Kentucky River at the Rock Shoal, thence up the left hand point just above John Putthuff's line to the ridge and with the ridge to the Duck Fork of Sturgeon. We believe to be the best and nearest way for that road and will not be a disadvantage of any person or persons. Signed: Jonathan Brandenburg, John Lutes and John Putthuff. Ordered summoned Thomas Duckham, Jamerson Arvine, and Henry Lutes, the properties of the land through which said road is proposed. 16 May 1825 - Motion of Elisha Husk, that John Holland, Andrew Pence, Presley David, Cornelius Spry, to view a road leading from the North Fork of the Kentucky River opposite the mouth of War Creek to intersect the road leading from the Morgan Co. Courthouse to the river, near the head of Hollys Creek at the Estill County line. 16 Aug 1825 - Motion of Smallwood Noland, for Division of District for the road leading from the town of Irvine to the Clay Co. Line. 1st precinct begins at William Gess' old place where Edward Barnes now lives and to extend to some blazed trees at the road leading to Volentine Crawford. 2nd From thence to the fork of the path just below the Winding Stairs above the rock. 3rd From thence to the fork of the road at John Brandenburg's tar kiln. 4th Thence to where the said review crosses the Kentucky River. 5th Thence to a chestnut tree cut for staves on the dividing ridge near James Kennedy's tar kiln. 6th From thence to the Duck Fork of Sturgeon at the end of said review. Order Andrew Alexander be appointed Surveyor of the 1st, his hand be in his Militia Company. 2nd Precinct A.C. Elliott, his hands be in Capt. Burgher's Militia Company. 3rd John B. Powell, his hands be in his Militia Company. 4th William Crawford, all hands in his Militia Company. 5th John Akers, all hands in his Militia Company. 6th William P. Noland, hand be in his Militia Company within the County of Estill. May 1827 - Appoint Archibald McGuire a Surveyor of the road leading from Rock Shoal to the chestnut stump in place of Page Noland. The allotment of hand be from the moust of Buffalo to Andrew Kelly's on Sturgeon, and that John Runnels be the Surveyor from the chestnut stup to the Clay Co. Line, his hand be from the mouth of Buffalo up to and including Nicholas Bowman. 20 May 1839 - Cornelius Moore appointed Surveyor of the road from the Widow Fox Spring to the Clay Co. Line on the Bowman Road to the Rock Shoal in place of David W. Bullock. His hand be from the mount of Buffalo up to the Clay Co. Line, then up the South Fork of the Kentucky River to the Clay Co. Line to include Andrew Mays, Wesley Reynolds, Filson Ward, Patrick Hamilton, William Bowles and William Allen. 20 May 1839 - Simeon Portwood appointed Surveyor of the road from the foot of Brushy Mountain to the Clay Co. Line in the place of Joel Martin, his hand to be Thomas Canter, Joel Martin, Ezekial Parrish, Jerry Fowler, Elisha Harrison, James Hill, Isaac Sparks, Lisha Harris, Carter Lax, William McQueen, John McQueen, Joseph Muck, John Cane, Solomon Partwood, Silas Gray, Robert Sparks, Barnett Sparks, Peter Gabbard, Jonathan Harrison, Green Lax, William Sparks, Elias Tungate, Henry Plowman and William Asbell. ****************************************** Copyright.
