01/07/1930

The body of Daisy Horn, a young woman of about 19 years of age, was found
near the east end of the South Irvine bridge with at least three wounds from
pistol balls in her body. She was the daughter of Boyd Horn, who lived near
South Irvine.

01/21/1930

The Ravenna Hotel, known as the Jones building, has opened up with a first
class hotel and eating establishment under the direction of Mrs. Lafferty.

Wayne Powell and Owen Montgomery are invited to play over the radio of the
Courier-Journal and Times.

01/24/1930

The W.T.B. Williams & Sons Bank, the Farmers Bank and Trust Company,
both of Irvine, and the Ravenna State Bank, of Ravenna have merged. The new
bank, known as the Union Bank and Trust Company is one of the strongest in
Eastern Kentucky and has resources of more than a million and a quarter
dollars.

To date, sixteen persons have been convicted of felonies at the term of
Estill Circuit court and sentenced to various terms in the penitentiary.

02/25/1930

No indictment has been made when the regular February term of Estill
Circuit Court ended in the killing of Daisy Horn, 19, as mentioned before.

03/25/1930

David Estes, charged with the murder of former sheriff of Estill County,
A.J. Brookshire, was found guilty and sentenced to confinement in the
penitentiary for the rest of his natural life.

04/15/1930

One of the many features offered by the new Maytag washer is a one-piece
cast aluminum tub. It is also guaranteed to keep water hot for an entire
washing.

05/20/1930

B.F. Jacobs, of irvine, celebrated his 88th birthday acting as foreman of
the grand jury, sitting in the court house which he had built more than
sisty years prior.

06/13/1930

The irvine Board of Education has purchased 15 to 20 acres from the
Riddell estate for the purpose of building a city high school. The plans
are for a mondern new building of from ten to fifteen rooms, laboratory,
library, and other needed rooms.

08/12/1930

Two large caves, of crystal formation, were discovered by an Ohio tourist,
John M. Hamilton and other explored the caves for a distance of about two
miles. Several rooms were found and one was about 100 feet in height. The
caves are located near the Estill-Lee County lines and were close together.

10/10/1930

An announcement is made by the State Highway Commission that an order that
has been entered to free three toll bridges in Kentucky at once. The one
that is of local interest was the Clays Ferry Bridge.

10/14/1930

The Strand Theatre is featuring Al Jolsen in "Mammy" and Hoot
Gibson in "Spurs"

11/25/1930

Judge and Mrs. Hugh Riddell entertained with a "possum supper".
Guests were C.R. Carrington, B.H. Scott, R.F. Fledge, Clarence Miller,
F.Y. Simmons, V.V. Vinson and J.R. White. "Possum" and "sweet taters"
were the chief articles of the menus.
