VET WHO MARCHED WITH SHERMAN DIES Marshall Crawford, 86, Made Run to State in 1889 ------------------------------------------------------------ Contributed to the Estill Co., KY Archives by: Sharon Crawford ------------------------------------------------------------ Oklahoma County Newspaper - January 23, 1933 Marshall CRAWFORD, 86-year-old Civil War veteran who joined the Union Army when he was 15, died at his farm home six miles east of the capital today of pneumonia. Mr. CRAWFORD enlisted in the Union forces in Kentucky and served three years as a cavalryman under Gen. U.S. Grant. He was with Gen. Sherman in his famous march to the sea. In 1889 Mr. CRAWFORD made the run into Oklahoma, homesteading on the 160 acres where he had lived ever since. He was a prominent worker in the Star district community activities for several years. Services at 2 p.m. tomorrow will be conducted in the Star School near his home with the Rev. E. Graves officiating. Classes will be dismissed at the school early for the services. Burial in Spencer will be in charge of the Beveridge Funeral Home. Mr. Crawford is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Mae Perry; two grandsons, Philip and Theodore Perry and one granddaughter, Mrs. George Dunham, all living on the home place.
