History of Irvine High ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed to the Estill Co., KY Archives by: Jen Bawden Originally published in "The Irvine Times" on May 20, 1938 and republished in the ECHGS Newsletter & used with their permission Date: 05/16/1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Estill County High School was established in 1917 It was officially accredited as a Class B High School in January, 1921. At the beginning of the school year of 1923-24, by contract with the County Board of Education, the Estill County High School became Irvine High School, operated and administrated by the irvine Board of Education and continued as such during two successive years. Again, by agreement, the operation of the high school reverted to the Estill County Board of Education and continued as such until the school term, 1930-31, when it was taken over by the irvine Board of Education again. During all of the time since the organization of a high school in Irvine there has been but one high school in the county, and students from Ravenna and the county have attended with the irvine students. The present plant was begun in 1930 and completed for occupancy in May, 1933, after legal difficulties interfered with its completion for several months. During the period from 1917 to 1937 the enrollment increased from 17 to 508; the number of teachers increased from one to seventeen; the number of graduates from 2 in 1921, the first class, to 74 in 1938. Note: 1916 was the last year for the Estill Collegiate Institute, a private high school in Estill County. The school was purchased by the Estill County School System at a cost far below its market value.
