Early Schools of Estill County By Ellen Rogers May 1839 J.A. Campbell agreed and bond himself to teach school for nine months in the Snow Creek Meeting House-five days each week. School to open in the morning by one hour by sun and dismiss by the same in the evening, except Fridays and then dismiss in the evening by one hour and half by sun, and to have good order in time of school. Campbell agreed to teach spelling, reading, writing and arithmetic, agreeable to the best of his ability for $9.00 per scholar. One third to be paid in trade at the common neighborhood. We the following subscribers agreed on our part to furnish fuel, books, paper, and everything suitable. The school is to commence as soon as twenty-five scholars are subscribed. The subscribers: John Kimbrell, Wiley Kimbrell, James Lilly, Nancy See, Lurvana Evans, James Kimbrell, John Eaton, James Alexander, George Cooper, Sarah Watts, James Walters, ? Niblick, William Ewell, Thomas Potts, Samuel Griggs, David Griggs, Samuel Alexander, ? Euerman, and Charles Wood. February 1850 The undersigned proposes teaching a common English School in the Irvine Seminary for the term of five months, four weeks to the month and five days each week, and to use his utmost ability to advance the pupils in the several branches which they may persue (sic). Prices as follows: For Orthography, Reading, Writing and arithmetic $1.50 for each scholar. For History and Geography $7.50, and for English Grammar, Philosophy $8.50 per scholar. Scholl binds himself to teach a common English School for the term of five months, four weeks to the month and five days to the week in the Seminary in the above mention town of Irvine. He binds himself to keep good order in time of school and to use his utmost ability to advance the pupils in the study which they may persue. We, the subscribers, bind ourselves to pay said Scholl the following fees for tuition or Orthgraphy, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. $5.50 per session for each scholar for Geography, History or Bookkeeping. $7.50 per scholar for English Grammar, and Philosophy. $8.50 per scholar all day. Scholar will pay $1.50 extra on branches he or she may persue. The subscribers will furnish such books as may be needed, also their proportional part of fuel at the experation of the first session.
